Some 200 masterpieces by French painter Henri Matisse, worth more than NT$5.7 billion (US$163 million), will be on display at the National Museum of History starting today.
The exhibition was made possible after the sponsors, including the Musee Matisse from the painter's hometown of Cateau and the United Daily News, assembled the masterpieces from private and public museums, as well as private collectors from France, the UK, the US and Tahiti.
On display will be some 200 works of Matisse's sketches, sculptures, oil paintings, and decorative compositions made of cut paper, making it one of the largest Matisse exhibitions ever to be staged in Asia.
The Matisse exhibit will be on display at the museum through Feb. 16, 2003.
Tropical Storm Nari is not a threat to Taiwan, based on its positioning and trajectory, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said yesterday. Nari has strengthened from a tropical depression that was positioned south of Japan, it said. The eye of the storm is about 2,100km east of Taipei, with a north-northeast trajectory moving toward the eastern seaboard of Japan, CWA data showed.
