Taoyuan County boasts 68 citizens aged 100 years or older, according to government statistics released yesterday.
Of this group, 47 are female and 21 male. The oldest is a 106-year-old woman identified as Liao A-fang (
County officials said many of the centenarians are living with family members spanning four to five generations.
"More admirably, most of them are healthy," said an official.
The centenarians generally attribute their longevity to a well-controlled diet, frequent exercise and a clean-living environment.

For years, they have refrained from eating spicy foods, exercised regularly and always taken things easy.

All 68 centenarians recently received gifts from the Presidential Office, the Ministry of the Interior and the Taoyuan County Government for the Double Ninth Festival, which is dedicated to honoring senior citizens.
The Double Ninth Festival, or Chung Yang Festival, occurs on the ninth day of the ninth moon of the lunar calendar, which falls on Oct. 14 this year.

A magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck off Taitung County at 1:09pm today, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said. The hypocenter was 53km northeast of Taitung County Hall at a depth of 12.5km, CWA data showed. The intensity of the quake, which gauges the actual effect of a seismic event, measured 4 in Taitung County and Hualien County on Taiwan's seven-tier intensity scale, the data showed.
