Paraguayan President Luis Angel Gonzalez Macchi and his wife will arrive in Taipei on Monday for a five-day visit, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said yesterday.

Later in the day, Chen and Minister of Foreign Affairs Eugene Chien (簡又新) will accompany the delegation on a visit to enterprises in Chiayi before Chen hosts a national banquet for the delegation at Janfusun Resort Hotel in Yunlin.
Gonzalez, 55, was sworn in as Paraguay's president in March 1999 and visited Taiwan for the first time in September that year.
During his visit, Gonzalez will be conferred an honorary doctoral degree at National Chiayi University and attend the 13th Economic Cooperation Meeting between Taiwan and Paraguay.

Meanwhile, the foreign ministry also announced that the Sixth Meeting of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Taiwan, Dominica, Grenada, St. Kitts and Nevis, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines would be held at the foreign ministry on Thursday.
The first meeting of the ministers was held in 1997. Over the past five years, the meetings have been held alternately in Taipei and in the capitals of the eastern Caribbean countries.
The meeting's participants are scheduled to arrive in Taiwan on Monday. They will meet with Chen and Chien and visit various cultural and economic establishments during their visit.

A new tropical storm formed late yesterday near Guam and is to approach closest to Taiwan on Thursday, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said. Tropical Storm Pulasan became the 14th named storm of the year at 9:25pm yesterday, the agency said. As of 8am today, it was near Guam traveling northwest at 21kph, it said.
