Minister of Justice Chen Ding-nan (
Chen arrived in Tokyo Wednesday after a 12-day visit to the US to promote cooperation in cracking down on international criminal activities, including money laundering, drug trafficking and commercial piracy.
During his visit to the prestigious Japanese university, Chen held talks with its president, Tsuyoi Sasaki, and the chairman of its department of law.
Chen said after the visit that his Japanese hosts were amenable to his proposal of sending select Taiwanese prosecutors to Tokyo University to study at its graduate institute for advanced studies.
Noting that Japan is regarded as a "kingdom of prosecutors," Chen said Japanese prosecutors enjoy high social standing and professional dignity. He added that, Taiwan's prosecutors have much to learn from their Japanese counterparts, particularly their professional expertise and devotion to their work.
Over the past two years, Chen said, Taiwan has sent several prosecutors to Japan to work as trainees at Japanese prosecutors' offices. "We hope that the cooperative program can be continued and expanded in the future," he added.
Earlier in the day, Chen met with former Japanese justice minister, Hiroshi Nakai, who is now a member of the lower house of the Japanese Diet (parliament), for wide-ranging talks.
In the evening, Chen joined a legislative delegation from Taiwan and met a number of Japanese Diet members to exchange views on a broad range of issues of mutual concern.
The delegation, composed of 25 legislators of different political stripes, arrived in Tokyo at noon yesterday for a visit aimed at promoting parliamentary exchanges. The group is headed by Legislative Yuan Vice President P. K. Chiang (江丙坤).

F-16 Block 70/72 are newly manufactured F-16 jets built by Lockheed Martin to the standards of the F-16V upgrade package. Republic of China

A new tropical storm formed late yesterday near Guam and is to approach closest to Taiwan on Thursday, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said. Tropical Storm Pulasan became the 14th named storm of the year at 9:25pm yesterday, the agency said. As of 8am today, it was near Guam traveling northwest at 21kph, it said.
