Lin, 66, who has taught law at National Chengchih University for the past three decades, said her husband no longer practiced law or the Presidential Office would not have hired him.
As for her son, Lin pointed out that the military never enlisted him in the first place, as "he followed me to the US when I studied there years back and later went to England for his own education."
Still, Wu said that Lin, a would-be ranking judiciary official, should take the initiative and redress the mistake whether it was made intentionally or not.
Lin would not make a pledge, saying she and her family members are all law-abiding citizens.
By contrast, former Keelung mayor Lee Chin-yung (
Lee, a long-time member of the ruling DPP, said he agreed to such checks but stressed the need for restraint on the part of law-enforcement officers.
"It is only reasonable for citizens to pledge their allegiance to the country," Lee told the legislature.
"But those in power must be careful when implementing the checks to avoid charges of abusing their power."
The legislature is conducting hearings on the qualifications of candidates for 27 government posts: 21 Examination Yuan members, two Grand Justices and four Control Yuan members.
Voting on the candidates will take place on Thursday and Friday.

Following Trump’s meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba on Friday, the US and Japan issued a joint statement where they reaffirmed the importance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and support for Taiwan’s meaningful participation in international organizations. Trump has not personally brought up the “one China” policy in more than a year, National Taiwan University Department of Political Science Associate Professor Chen Shih-min (陳世民)
