The relationship between Taiwan and the Holy See remains close and firm, Minister of Foreign Affairs Eugene Chien (簡又新) said on Monday prior to ending his visit to the Vatican, Taiwan's only diplomatic ally in Europe.
"The ROC and the Holy See are intimate partners in charitable work as well as humanitarian missions," Chien said, adding that the two sides share the same belief in democracy and freedom.
Chien's visit to the Vatican is part of a weeklong European trip that began May 31 in Rome. He mentioned that, aside from Taiwan's long-time friends -- the Holy See, the US and countries in Latin America -- it should pay more attention to strengthening ties with all European countries, including the EU.
"We'll step up forging dialogue with the European Parliament -- the EU's legislative arm -- and the European Commission -- the EU's executive arm," Chien said.
However, he said that under the EU's "one China" policy, the question of how to promote the public image and position of Taiwan is an important issue.
To this end, he said, Taiwan can work toward increasing substantive cooperation with European countries in the economic, trade, culture, education and tourism fields.
Starlux Airlines, Taiwan’s newest international carrier, has announced it would apply to join the Oneworld global airline alliance before the end of next year. In an investor conference on Monday, Starlux Airlines chief executive officer Glenn Chai (翟健華) said joining the alliance would help it access Taiwan. A new tropical storm formed late yesterday near Guam and is to approach closest to Taiwan on Thursday, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said.
