The New York Yankees on Thursday beat the Kansas City Royals 3-1 to advance in the playoffs as Cleveland kept their season alive with a 5-4 win over Detroit.
Juan Soto, Gleyber Torres and Giancarlo Stanton drove in runs for the Yankees, while pitching ace Gerrit Cole surrendered just one run over seven sparkling innings as the Yankees clinched their best-of-five American League Division Series 3-1 to reach the American League Championship Series (ALCS).
They next face either the Detroit Tigers or Cleveland Guardians. The Guardians leveled their series at 2-2 thanks to a two-run home run in the seventh inning from David Fry — whose sacrifice bunt added an insurance run in the top of the ninth that would prove to be the difference.

In Kansas City, Soto put New York in front in the first inning with a single that scored Torres, who opened the game with a double.
Torres’ single in the fifth put the Yankees up 2-0 and Game 3 home run hero Stanton knocked in a run with a single in the sixth.
That was all the scoring Cole and the Yankees bullpen needed.
“What a performance by GC to come out here and do his thing,” Yankees slugger Aaron Judge told broadcaster TBS of Cole, who allowed six hits with no walks and four strikeouts on 87 pitches. “That’s why he’s our ace. He goes out there and does performances like this when we need him to.”
Closing pitcher Luke Weaver retired three straight batters in the bottom of the ninth to seal the win.
Kansas City’s only run came with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning — shortly after the benches briefly cleared in the wake of Yankees second baseman Anthony Volpe’s hard tag on Maikel Garcia.
The Yankees, who lost the 2022 ALCS to the Houston Astros and missed the post-season last year, will be favored against either Cleveland or Detroit in the ALCS when the best-of-seven series starts on Monday in New York.
The Guardians host the Tigers in Game 5 of their series today.
Shut out by the upstart Tigers in Game 2 and Game 3, the Guardians were down 3-2 when Fry was called in to pinch-hit with one runner on and two out in the top of the seventh inning.
He deposited a fastball from Tigers reliever Beau Brieske over the left-center-field fence to put the Guardians ahead for good.
“I was just trying to get a pitch to hit,” Fry said. “I had some opportunities yesterday to drive some runners in and didn’t get the job done. So I was looking to get it done for the boys and luckily it went out.”
Cleveland added a run in the top of the ninth, Fry laying down a bunt that allowed Brayan Rocchio to score from third base. Rocchio had singled with one out in the inning and reached third on Steven Kwan’s base hit.
That insurance run proved to be necessary when the Tigers clawed one back in the bottom of the ninth. Justyn-Henry Malloy opened the inning off Cleveland closing pitcher Emmanuel Clase with a double to left field. He reached third on a groundout by Parker Meadows and scored on another by Jace Jung before Clase recorded the final out.
Cleveland ended a streak of 11 defeats in playoff elimination games, a skid dating back to Game 6 of the 1997 World Series.
Jose Ramirez also homered for the Guardians and Zach McKinstry homered for Detroit in a tense battle that twice saw the Tigers rally to tie it before they took a 3-2 lead on Wenceel Perez’s run-scoring single in the sixth inning.
Eugenie Bouchard already has her own signature pickleball paddle. She is No. 17 in the pickleball rankings and constantly appears on the main court at events because she is always a big draw. However, just to be absolutely clear, she is not retired from tennis. The 2014 Wimbledon finalist still practices on the tennis court, still competes at tennis events and still has a Women’s Tennis Association ranking (No. 1,288). The Canadian standout just has a new sport that has caught her attention. Bouchard is one of several familiar tennis names — like Jack Sock and Donald Young — crossing over to
Shaquille O’Neal is staying with TNT Sports on a new contract worth more than US$15 million per year, Front Office Sports reported on Friday. The news means the cast of Inside the NBA is staying together even as TNT is set to license out the show to ESPN starting next season. TNT was the odd network out in the NBA’s recent TV rights negotiations, as NBC and Amazon joined previous rightsholder ESPN in inking deals for basketball games. That left TNT without a need for pregame and postgame NBA shows. In a trade with ESPN, TNT is licensing Inside the NBA to the
Starting with three fights in the first nine seconds and ending with a celebration and a spot in the 4 Nations Face-Off final, the US on Saturday delivered exactly what Matthew Tkachuk hoped for by beating Canada. “We needed to send a message,” Tkachuk said. “The message we wanted to send is ‘It’s our time.’” Tkachuk fought Brandon Hagel off the opening faceoff, brother Brady tussled with Sam Bennett the next time the puck dropped, J.T. Miller dropped the gloves with Colton Parayko next and the Americans followed those fisticuffs with a 3-1 victory over their biggest rival. “That was one of the
Aaliyah Edwards on Monday pulled off the stunner of the opening round of the Unrivaled one-on-one tournament, beating top-seeded Breanna Stewart 12-0. The tournament to be played over three days featured 23 of the WNBA’s 36 players. A few had other commitments and a couple others were out with injuries. Stewart got the ball first against Edwards and missed a contested layup. Edwards then hit a three-pointer from the corner and a jumper from the elbow to go up 5-0. The player who scores keeps the basketball. Edwards hit two layups and a three-pointer to seal the win. Stewart, a two-time WNBA Most Valuable Player,
