The NFL must pay more than US$4.7 billion in class-action damages for overcharging subscribers of its “Sunday Ticket” telecasts, a California federal jury said on Thursday.
Jurors in Los Angeles agreed with the plaintiffs that the NFL conspired with member teams to artificially inflate the price of “Sunday Ticket” for millions of residential and commercial subscribers.
The jury awarded US$4.6 billion to a residential class, and US$96 million to commercial subscribers such as bars and restaurants, an attorney for the plaintiffs said.

A judge could award triple damages under US antitrust law, bringing the total judgement to more than US$14 billion.
The NFL in a statement said it was disappointed by the verdict.
“We will certainly contest this decision as we believe that the class action claims in this case are baseless and without merit,” it said.
The NFL earlier this week asked the court to rule for the league and its teams as a matter of law, which could nullify the verdict.
Attorneys for the plaintiffs in a statement on Thursday said: “We are pleased with today’s result on behalf of the classes we represent.”
The trial, which began on June 5, capped more than a decade of litigation over the “Sunday Ticket” telecasts.
The subscribers accused the NFL of using agreements with broadcast partners to keep a stranglehold over distribution, allowing DirecTV to charge artificially higher prices as the former sole distributor of “Sunday Ticket.”
A residential subscription to “Sunday Ticket,” which is the only broadcast option for fans to watch out-of-market games, now costs as much as US$449 through its current distributor, Google’s YouTube.
DirecTV and Google were not defendants in the trial.
DirecTV is owned by AT&T and Google is owned by Alphabet.
The plaintiffs claimed that “Sunday Ticket” prices were inflated to limit subscriptions and protect distribution rights fees that CBS and Fox paid to air games in local markets.

The Daredevils yesterday took eight catches in the final as they eked out a victory in the Taiwan Cricket Triangular Tournament against PCCT at Yingfeng Cricket Ground in Taipei’s Songshan District. PCCT’s batting lineup collapsed after they asked the Daredevils to bowl in the T20 decider of the weekend tournament that also involved the Formosa Cricket Club. PCCT were bundled out for 76 in 16.2 overs against a disciplined Daredevils attack. Ninad Malwade was the top scorer in the innings with 21, but he was among those who offered chances to the fielders. Shane Ferreira and Jason Cameron took three wickets each, with
This year’s Taiwan Athletics Open, which offers Taiwanese athletes an opportunity to compete against their international peers, would be held under a new name after its organizers had earlier announced the event’s cancelation. In a statement issued yesterday, the Chinese Taipei Athletics Association said the competition would still take place on June 6-7 at Banciao Stadium, but under the name “New Taipei City Athletics Open 2026.” The event was given a new name to emphasize its local identity and conform with the international practice of naming World Athletics Tour events after cities, the association said. It said it would soon
Taiwanese shortstop Cheng Tsung-che on Friday made history for the Boston Red Sox’s Triple A affiliate, hitting the Worcester Red Sox’s first cycle, while netting two runs, as they beat fellow Taiwan teammate Stuart Fairchild’s Columbus Clippers. The 24-year-old former Pittsburgh Pirates prospect went 4-4, completing a full cycle, starting with a triple in the second inning off Ryan Webb in the WooSox’s 9-3 victory over the Cleveland Guardians’ Triple A affiliate. He scored in the same inning after teammate Vinny Capra, a fellow former Pirate, grounded out. The Pingtung County native followed that up with a walk in the third, an
