E-sports has long been derided as “not a real sport,” but now, an Olympic-organized event is being dismissed by competitive gamers as not real e-sports.
Many long-time backers of big-money digital contests, which are edging their way towards elite-level recognition, are puzzled by the choice of games at the inaugural Olympics Esports Week that starts in Singapore today.
Instead of including well-established gaming titles, it is to feature 10 simulated sports, among them archery, baseball, chess and taekwondo.

Aficionados are concerned with the choice of virtual sports — that is, digital recreations of real-world events — rather than e-sports, which are essentially video games played at an elite competitive level.
With popular video games such as Counter-Strike and DOTA 2, e-sports has been booming over the past decade.
It has penetrated pop culture and social media, its tournaments filling stadiums and pulling millions of online viewers.

Matthew Woods from e-sports marketing agency AFK said the disappointment over the Olympics Esports Week “spawned from the fact that none of the games selected were games that anybody in the industry really considered to be e-sports.”
Malaysian professional e-sports coach Khairul Azman Mohamad Sharif agreed, saying he found the list baffling.
“I don’t think these sports games should be highlighted at the competition compared to top e-sports games, considering these types of sports are already physically contested,” he said.

The only saving grace for some is that the shooting event will involve the globally loved Fortnite, but in a version without its kill-or-be-killed “Battle Royale” mode.
That modification is because the International Olympic Council (IOC) cannot feature titles that go against Olympic values, so a lot of popular video games with violence are out.
The IOC officially recognized e-sports as a sport in 2017 and has been in discussions with industry players about inclusion on the most prestigious stage.
NEW FRONTIERS
Such changes tend to happen slowly, but the IOC has opened new frontiers recently, with skateboarding at the Tokyo Games and breakdancing at the upcoming Paris Games.
E-sports are to be a medal sport for the first time at the upcoming Asian Games in Hangzhou, China.
Describing the list of games as “a very sensible first approach,” Global Esports Federation vice president and British Esports CEO Chester King said the Singapore event would be a positive step in eventually putting popular video games on the Olympic roster.
“This is the first event and we’ve got to make sure all the stakeholders in the IOC accept it and like it,” he said.
Bryan Tan, a partner at law firm Reed Smith, which specializes in e-sports and media, said the event “is also a testing ground to iron out the kinks involved in bringing e-sports to the Olympic level.”
IOC sports director Kit McConnell said that the choices were made to support virtual sports.
“This is why we have focused first on virtual and simulated sports games in the competition series,” he said.
He added that selected games had to be inclusive with no technical barriers to entry and have gender equality, which is “often not yet the case in the field of competitive gaming.”
If popular video game titles do make it to the Olympic level with top players, the Games would stand to potentially draw millions of fresh viewers.
PUBLISHER POWER
However, a major challenge could be navigating intricate relationships with publishers of popular games.
AFK’s Woods said that publishers are “commercial enterprises which own the IP [intellectual property] that their games are built on and therefore have an unlimited amount of influence into who hosts events and how this is done.”
While there are no concrete plans now for e-sports to be included as medal events at the Olympics, the Singapore event will be watched closely to see what sort of reception it garners.
“I think it will be fascinating to see how it is received. Much of this will no doubt come down to the altered format of the games,” Woods said.
American rugby sevens star Ilona Maher is to join 15-a-side club Bristol next month in a bid to play in next year’s Women’s Rugby World Cup, the English club announced on Monday. Maher, 28, helped the US to a bronze medal at this summer’s Olympic Games in Paris and is the seven-a-side sport’s most popular player on social media. “This is a huge coup to be able to bring Ilona Maher to Bristol Bears on a short-term deal,” Bristol head coach Dave Ward said. “She is one of the biggest names in women’s sport, let alone rugby, and we believe she will
US skier Mikaela Shiffrin said she sustained an abrasion on her left hip and that something “stabbed” her when she crashed during her second run of an Audi FIS Ski World Cup giant slalom race on Saturday, doing a flip and sliding into the protective fencing. Shiffrin stayed down on the edge of the course for quite some time as the ski patrol attended to her. She was taken off the hill on a sled and waved to the cheering crowd before going to a clinic for evaluation. “Not really too much cause for concern at this point, I just
HISTORIC VICTORY: Botafogo are the last of the four big Rio clubs to win the Copa Libertadores and they earned a spot in next year’s FIFA Club World Cup Botafogo on Saturday overcame playing with 10 men to win their first Copa Libertadores title after beating fellow Brazilian side Atletico Mineiro 3-1 in the final at Estadio Monumental. After just 30 seconds, midfielder Gregore, one of Botafogo’s best players, hit the head of Fausto Vera with his foot and was given a straight red card. “It was so hard to have one less so early in a final. It was an unfortunate move,” Botafogo defender Alexander Barboza said. “But Gregore deserves this title as much as we do. We made history and that won’t ever be erased.” Winger Luiz
LeBron James is in quite the shooting slump — especially from long distance, highlighted by his zero-for-four effort from three-point range for the Los Angeles Lakers in their 109-80 loss against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Monday. That return stretched the nearly-40-year-old’s skid to zero-for-19 from deep over his past four games. James’ birthday is on Dec. 30. After going four-for-16 from the floor overall with six of his team’s 20 turnovers for a season-low 10 points against the Timberwolves, James was asked to reflect on the Lakers reaching the quarter mark of their 2024-2025 schedule under rookie coach J.J. Redick at 12-9. “I
