Southampton appoint Jones
Southampton have appointed former Luton Town boss Nathan Jones as their new manager on a three-and-a-half-year contract, the Premier League side said yesterday, days after sacking Ralph Hasenhuettl with the team languishing in the relegation zone. Sunday’s 4-1 home defeat by Newcastle United left the south-coast club in 18th place after picking up only three wins from 14 league games and they will need Welshman Jones to turn their fortunes around quickly. “I’m really proud to be given this opportunity,” Jones said in a statement. “Obviously, I wanted to manage in the Premier League, I’ve dreamt of that since I’ve become a coach or a manager, but this club in particular — because of how it’s run, because of the structure, because of how they look deeper than just results — really appeals to me.”

Conte allays Kane fears
Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte said he substituted Harry Kane during Wednesday’s 2-0 League Cup loss to Nottingham Forest because of tiredness, allaying concerns about a possible injury to the England captain before the FIFA World Cup. Kane, who was taken off before the hour mark, has started all 21 of Spurs’ games this season in all competitions. The 29-year-old also played the full 90 minutes in both of England’s Nations League games in September. “It was a problem of tiredness,” Conte told reporters. “Really, really tired and yesterday we had a soft training session and at one point he stopped himself to recover energy, but he’s okay, it’s only fatigue, but it’s normal because Harry played every game. When you have a player like him it’s difficult to decide you don’t play with him.”

Judge, Goldschmidt honored
New American League home-run king Aaron Judge and St Louis Cardinals slugger Paul Goldschmidt on Wednesday won Hank Aaron Awards that reward the most outstanding offensive performers in each league. Judge and Goldschmidt are both finalists for the Most Valuable Player honors to be presented next week by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America. Now a free agent, Judge hit 62 home runs last season with the New York Yankees, topping the AL record of 61 set by Roger Maris in 1961, while Goldschmidt led the National League in slugging percentage (.578) and on-base average (.404), while hitting 0.317 with 35 home runs and 115 RBIs. Every team nominates candidates for the Aaron awards. A group of MLB.com writers choose the eight finalists in each league, and fan votes are added to the picks by a panel of Hall of Fame players.

LeBron James hurt
LeBron James on Wednesday scored 30 points before leaving the court with pain in his left leg late in the Los Angeles Lakers’ 114-101 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers. James felt discomfort in his leg and groin shortly after he backed down Paul George to draw a foul in the paint with less than five minutes to play. “I feel good, besides the injury,” James said. “We’ll get pictures on it tomorrow and go from there. Didn’t do anything strenuous on the play. When I landed, I felt a little spasm or strain in my groin. Immediately I asked to come out on the next play down.”
South Korean giants T1, led by “Faker,” won their fifth League of Legends (LoL) world championship crown in London on Saturday, beating China’s Bilibili Gaming (BLG) in a thrilling final. Amber Glenn overcame a fall and her own doubts to win a maiden Grand Prix figure skating title on Saturday at the Grand Prix de France. The American skater had the lead from Friday’s short program. That and the support of the crowd got her through a tough free skate in which she fell on a triple flip and put a hand onto the ice to steady herself on two other jumps. “I didn’t feel that great out there today, but I really tried, and the audience really got me through that last half when I was doubting myself,” Glenn
