A devastated India yesterday crashed to their lowest-ever score of 36 as Australia ran riot to win the opening Test in Adelaide by eight wickets after Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins produced a bowling masterclass.
India started the third day of the pink-ball Test on 9-1 and with a 62-run lead, looking to build a competitive second-innings total for the hosts to chase.
However, their hopes were left in tatters by a wicket with bounce and deviation as Hazlewood took 5-8, including his 200th Test wicket, and Cummins 4-21.

Wicketkeeper Tim Paine claimed five catches as the bowlers found the edge.
“I didn’t expect it to come that quick, I was expecting a real dogfight,” Paine said. “To hang in, give our bowlers a chance, and then turn up and start the day the way we did, full credit to our bowling attack again. It’s nice to get off to a good start. Chuffed with the way we bowled in this Test.”
It was an incredible India collapse, with no batsman reaching double figures during a capitulation that lasted fewer than 22 overs, in contrast to their battling first innings of 244.

That included skipper Virat Kohli, who fell for 4 and now heads home for the birth of his first child, leaving his stunned team to face three more Tests, starting in Melbourne on Boxing Day, without him.
Ajinkya Rahane is to assume the captaincy.
“It’s very hard to put those feelings into words,” said a disconsolate Kohli. “We had a lead of 60-odd when we arrived, and then just collapsed. We played two days of good cricket to get in a position and then just lose it in an hour. It really hurts.”
India’s previous Test low was 42 against England at Lord’s in 1974. Their 36 was the joint fourth-lowest of all time, with New Zealand’s 26 facing England in 1955 in Auckland the worst ever.
The carnage left Australia, who scored 191 in the first innings, needing 90 to win, with out-of-form Joe Burns hitting a confidence-building 51 not out, including a six to win the match.
Matthew Wade made 33 and Marnus Labuschagne 6, with Steve Smith not out 1.
Cummins wasted no time removing nightwatchman Jasprit Bumrah for 2 in the second over of the day, tempting him to push at a slower ball that popped back up to him.
That brought the stubborn Cheteshwar Pujara to the crease. He saw off an over from Cummins, but that was as good as it got for the veteran, who fell without scoring.
Cummins, the world’s No. 1 Test bowler, sent down a delivery that had to be played and Pujara caught an edge that carried to Paine.
It left India on 15-3 and it only got worse, with opener Mayank Agarwal back in the pavillon five balls later for 9, again caught by Paine on Hazlewood’s opening delivery.
Hazlewood and Paine again combined to get rid of Rahane for 0, after which Cummins picked up the massive wicket of Kohli.
The superstar batsman had smacked Cummins for four, but was gone the next ball after a review, caught by debutant Cameron Green as he attempted a cover drive.
Wriddhiman Saha (4) chipped a Hazlewood delivery to Labuschagne and Ravichandran Ashwin (0) was out next ball.
A four from Hanuma Vihari spared them some shame, taking India past New Zealand’s all-time low.
However, Vihari (8) did not last much longer, caught by Paine with Hazlewood again doing the damage to complete an excellent five-wicket haul, before Mohammed Shami was forced to retire hurt after a Cummins thunderbolt hit his right arm.
American rugby sevens star Ilona Maher is to join 15-a-side club Bristol next month in a bid to play in next year’s Women’s Rugby World Cup, the English club announced on Monday. Maher, 28, helped the US to a bronze medal at this summer’s Olympic Games in Paris and is the seven-a-side sport’s most popular player on social media. “This is a huge coup to be able to bring Ilona Maher to Bristol Bears on a short-term deal,” Bristol head coach Dave Ward said. “She is one of the biggest names in women’s sport, let alone rugby, and we believe she will

LeBron James is in quite the shooting slump — especially from long distance, highlighted by his zero-for-four effort from three-point range for the Los Angeles Lakers in their 109-80 loss against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Monday. That return stretched the nearly-40-year-old’s skid to zero-for-19 from deep over his past four games. James’ birthday is on Dec. 30. After going four-for-16 from the floor overall with six of his team’s 20 turnovers for a season-low 10 points against the Timberwolves, James was asked to reflect on the Lakers reaching the quarter mark of their 2024-2025 schedule under rookie coach J.J. Redick at 12-9. “I
TO NO AVAIL: The Denver Nuggets’ Serbian center Nikola Jokic surpassed his 53-point performance in the 2023 Western Conference semi-finals against Phoenix The Washington Wizards withstood a 56-point explosion from Denver star Nikola Jokic to beat the Nuggets 122-113 on Saturday and snap their 16-game NBA losing streak. Jokic, who won his third NBA Most Valuable Player (MVP) award last season, posted a career scoring high — surpassing a 53-point performance in game four of the 2023 Western Conference semi-finals against Phoenix and a 50-point regular-season best against Sacramento in 2021. The Serbian big man added 16 rebounds and eight assists, but it was all to no avail as Washington, buoyed by 39 points from Jordan Poole, won for the first time
