An inspired Neymar on Tuesday helped Paris Saint-Germain reach the Champions League final, but the fact that the Brazilian was not their best player against RB Leipzig says everything about the frightening strength of Thomas Tuchel’s team and shows why they can be confident of lifting the trophy for the first time.
Neymar has become a different player in his third year in the French capital. His first two seasons at PSG following his 222 million euro (US$264 million) transfer from Barcelona were blighted by injuries and constant speculation about a move back to Camp Nou.
When it became clear last summer that a return to Catalonia would not happen, he knuckled down and made a proper go of it in Paris.

This is the result.
After scoring in both legs against Borussia Dortmund in the last-16, just before the COVID-19 pandemic brought most sports to a halt, he was outstanding in the 2-1 quarter-final win over Atalanta BC last week in Lisbon and even better in the 3-0 demolition of Leipzig.
Neymar hit the post twice in the first half, including from an audacious free-kick wide out on the right as everyone waited for a cross.

The 28-year-old won the free-kick that led to Marquinhos’ opener and it was his flick that set up Angel Di Maria for the second goal, ensuring it was game over by halftime, before Juan Bernat sealed the win.
The only thing missing was a goal of his own.
“What can I say to Neymar to help him score a goal when I scored maybe two in my career,” Tuchel joked. “He scores in training, but he is playing exceptionally well, he is so, so strong. He has a winning mentality, a hunger to win and to show he is capable of being the best player in the world.”
“If he scores in the final, then I’ll be happy,” he said.
Neymar later posted a picture on Instagram of himself lying on the ground in agony, a reminder of his bad luck with injuries in his first two seasons after arriving in Paris for that world-record fee in 2017, which has clearly made him even more determined to succeed now.
“Today I am in one piece, with no injuries, able to help my teammates in the best possible way,” he wrote.
There will be no Ballon d’Or this year, with organizers France Football canceling the award because of the pandemic.
However, Neymar will still have a strong claim to be the best player on the planet if he can lead PSG past either Bayern Munich or Olympique Lyonnais, who were to play after press time last night, in Sunday’s final.
“I am sure that if we win the Champions League he will be in a position to win these trophies,” teammate Kylian Mbappe said. “He is destined to do so.”
Yet while Neymar and Mbappe, the two superstars and the two most expensive players of all time, dominate the headlines, there were standout performances all through PSG on Tuesday, in particular, Di Maria.
The Argentine was once the superstar at PSG before being eclipsed by his attacking colleagues.
Against Leipzig, on his return from suspension, it was he who set up two goals either side of scoring himself.
Di Maria looked right at home at the Estadio da Luz, where he turned out for SL Benfica for three years and where he was the man of the match for Real Madrid when they won the 2014 Champions League final against Atletico Madrid.
“It is going to be difficult to sleep tonight with the final in mind,” Di Maria said.
Nothing demonstrates the determination of PSG’s Qatari owners to conquer Europe better than their front three, who cost a combined 465 million euros in transfer fees alone.
This version of PSG, after years of underwhelming results in the Champions League, are now tantalizingly close to getting the ultimate return on Qatar’s huge investment.
A seven-year-old horse had to be euthanized on Friday after breaking its back on the final fence of a Grand National steeplechase race that it won despite sustaining the serious injury. It follows the death of four horses at the Cheltenham Festival last month — including one after the prestigious Gold Cup. Gold Dancer was competing in the Mildmay Novices’ Chase during Ladies Day at Aintree’s Grand National Festival. The horse managed to cross the finish line approximately four lengths ahead of runner-up Regent’s Stroll. “The winner of our second race of the day, Gold Dancer, was pulled up after
Taiwanese gymnast Tang Chia-hung on Sunday topped the men’s horizontal bar event at the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) World Cup in Osijek, Croatia, scoring 15.233 to take his third title this season. Tang delivered an outstanding performance in the final, earning a difficulty score of 6.500 and an execution score of 8.633 with a 0.1 stick bonus. His closest competitor was Milad Karimi of Kazakhstan, who finished second with 14.933 points. It was Tang’s third gold medal in the FIG World Cup series this year, following his horizontal bar wins in Azerbaijan on March 8, and in Turkey on March
The Daredevils yesterday took eight catches in the final as they eked out a victory in the Taiwan Cricket Triangular Tournament against PCCT at Yingfeng Cricket Ground in Taipei’s Songshan District. PCCT’s batting lineup collapsed after they asked the Daredevils to bowl in the T20 decider of the weekend tournament that also involved the Formosa Cricket Club. PCCT were bundled out for 76 in 16.2 overs against a disciplined Daredevils attack. Ninad Malwade was the top scorer in the innings with 21, but he was among those who offered chances to the fielders. Shane Ferreira and Jason Cameron took three wickets each, with
This year’s Taiwan Athletics Open, which offers Taiwanese athletes an opportunity to compete against their international peers, would be held under a new name after its organizers had earlier announced the event’s cancelation. In a statement issued yesterday, the Chinese Taipei Athletics Association said the competition would still take place on June 6-7 at Banciao Stadium, but under the name “New Taipei City Athletics Open 2026.” The event was given a new name to emphasize its local identity and conform with the international practice of naming World Athletics Tour events after cities, the association said. It said it would soon
