England manager Gareth Southgate waved away suggestions that Croatia will be afraid of playing his team at Wembley in their opening game at next year’s UEFA Euro tournament after they came out in the same group in Saturday’s draw in Bucharest.
The teams are to face off on June 14 in Group D in what is likely to be a pivotal game in determining who tops the section, which includes the Czech Republic and a play-off winner.
Southgate was told that Croatia coach Zlatko Dalic feared the prospect of going to Wembley right at the beginning of the tournament, with London one of 12 European cities to host matches.

“I think he’s been tactically economical with the truth there,” Southgate said.
England beat Croatia 2-1 at home last year in the Nations League, having drawn 0-0 away.
However, the most significant recent meeting between them came in last year’s FIFA World Cup semi-final in Moscow, when Croatia won 2-1.
“We have had three really good games, really tight games with them, with very little between the teams all three times,” Southgate said. “I think in the last game in their midfield they left [Chelsea’s Mateo] Kovacic on the bench, which tells you a little bit about the quality of the players that they have, and it’s quite an interesting contrast really.”
“They have hugely experienced players, right throughout the team, who have played big matches,” he said. “We are at the other end of the scale, very young, a lot of energy, but still learning and improving.”
Southgate was also asked if the match offered a real chance to exact revenge for that painful World Cup exit as England missed out on a first major tournament final since 1966.
“I think you can never make up for losing in a World Cup semi-final unfortunately,” he said. “We felt that after the Nations League. It was great to win that game, but it didn’t in any way redress it — if I was the Croatians, I know which game I’d rather have won, so I think that will be long gone, but it is a really attractive fixture for everybody.”
England’s second game is to be on June 19 against a team to emerge from the play-offs in March, either Norway, Serbia, Israel or Scotland.
They then have a final home group game against another familiar opponent in the Czech Republic, who they trounced 5-0 at Wembley in qualifying, but lost to 2-1 in Prague.
“They are two teams who we have had really good results against and also poor results, so it is not a group we can be complacent about,” Southgate said.
If they win their group, they face the Group F runners-up, probably Germany, France or Portugal, in the last 16 in Dublin.
Victory in that game would take them to a Rome quarter-final, possibly against Spain. Finishing second in their group might actually be the preferable path.
“In the end you want to try and win every game you play and at least have control of your destiny,” Southgate said.
The other groups from Saturday’s draw are:
Group A: Turkey, Italy, Wales, Switzerland, to be played in Rome and Baku; Group B: Denmark, Finland, Belgium, Russia (Saint Petersburg, Copenhagen); Group C: Netherlands, Ukraine, Austria and a play-off winner (Amsterdam, Bucharest); Group E: Spain, Sweden, Poland and a play-off winner (Bilbao, Dublin); Group F: Portugal, France, Germany and a play-off winner (Munich, Budapest).
The final is scheduled for July 12 in London.
Manchester United on Tuesday confirmed Michael Carrick as interim manager until the end of the season, tasking him with leading the Red Devils back into the UEFA Champions League. “Having the responsibility to lead Manchester United is an honor,” said Carrick, 44, who won 12 major trophies in his 12-year playing career at United. The former midfielder previously had an unbeaten three-game stint as caretaker boss at Old Trafford in 2021. Carrick then took on his first permanent managerial role at second-tier Middlesbrough in October 2022 and was sacked in June last year after the club finished 10th in the
James Harden on Friday scored 31 points and came up big in overtime to help the Los Angeles Clippers erase a double-digit deficit on the way to a 121-117 NBA victory over the Toronto Raptors. Harden scored 16 points in the fourth quarter and overtime as the Clippers pushed their wining steak to five games despite the absence of star Kawhi Leonard with a sprained right ankle. The Clippers trailed by 11 entering the fourth quarter, but Harden drilled a pair of free-throws with 1:24 left in regulation to tie it and after misses from both teams, they went to
Dallas Mavericks rookie Cooper Flagg on Wednesday was ruled out for the second half of their 118-109 loss to the Denver Nuggets after the No. 1 pick sprained his left ankle in the first half. Flagg was called for a foul while defending against Peyton Watson and turned the ankle as he fell to the floor with 6 minutes, 1 second left in the second quarter. Flagg limped to the bench and continued to the locker room, but returned for the final 2 minutes, 35 seconds before the break. The 19-year-old did not come out for the second half before the announcement that
Yassine Bounou on Wednesday saved two penalties, while Youssef en-Nesyri netted the decisive spot-kick as hosts Morocco secured a 4-2 shoot-out victory over Nigeria following a 0-0 draw in a tense Africa Cup of Nations semi-final in Rabat. Morocco, seeking their first continental title in 50 years, are to face 2021 winners Senegal in Sunday’s decider in Rabat, while Nigeria take on Egypt in the third-place playoff tomorrow. The 120 minutes before the shoot-out had few clear-cut chances for either side, but it was Morocco who created more opportunities, although they were denied by some fine saves from Nigeria goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali.
