Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts had some special guests in town to see Boston open a critical series against the American League East-leading New York Yankees on Thursday.
They got to the park too late to see his three-run homer in the first inning, so Bogaerts hit another — a solo shot in the eighth to give the Red Sox a 19-3 lead and seal a historic pounding of their long-time rivals.
“The last at-bat I saw my mom there and I was like: ‘I’m going to try,’” said Bogaerts, who also had his uncle and little league coaches in the stands. “I was happy I did. It will just be special having them here ... and having them enjoy watching me play and doing productive stuff for the team.”

Bogaerts, born in Aruba, had four hits on Thursday night as the Red Sox erupted for their biggest victory over the Yankees in the 117-year history of the rivalry.
Andrew Benintendi and Jackie Bradley Jr had three hits apiece; Bradley, Michael Chavis and J.D. Martinez each had two of Boston’s 10 doubles.
Eight players had at least two RBIs for Boston, tying a major league record.
The Red Sox have won three of their first four in a stretch of 14 straight games against the Yankees and Tampa Bay, the two teams ahead of them in the division.
However, Boston remain 10 games behind New York, a half-game behind the Rays and one-and-a-half behind Oakland in the race for the second AL wild card.
“It’s a good time for everyone to be contributing,” Bogaerts said. “If we keep it up for two months I think we’ll be in very good shape, but it’s hard to do.”
In the worst start by a Yankees pitcher against the Red Sox, Masahiro Tanaka (7-6) allowed 12 runs on 12 hits and three walks in 3-1/3 innings. It was the second-most earned runs ever allowed by a Yankees pitcher — Carl Mays gave up 13 in a complete game against Cleveland in 1923.
Rick Porcello (9-7) had his problems, giving back two runs in the second after being spotted a 7-0 lead. Kyle Higashioka added a solo homer in the fifth to make it 12-3.
However, the Red Sox right-hander managed to finish six innings, allowing three runs on six hits while striking out five and walking one.
Boston have scored double-digit runs in each of Porcello’s past five outings — the first major league pitcher to get that much support since 1896. He is 4-1 in his past six starts, despite giving up 30 runs in 29 innings.
“It’s been absolutely incredible,” Porcello said. “It seems like the last three or four games I pitched we put up damn near 20 runs. Run support is huge. And when we’re scoring like this, you do the best you can not to screw it up.”
Tanaka, who had won four straight decisions, walked Mookie Betts and Rafael Devers to start the first before Bogaerts hit a 451-foot homer over the Green Monster and onto Lansdowne Street below.
Devers leads the majors with 31 RBIs this month and is the youngest Red Sox player with a 30-RBI month since Ted Williams in August 1939.
Tanaka allowed three singles to load the bases and, with two outs, Bradley and Betts hit consecutive two-run doubles to make it 7-0.
Devers homered leading off the five-run fourth, when Boston chased Tanaka.
Yankees starters have allowed 40 runs over their past five games, something they had not done since 1912.
“It’s been each guy this time through,” manager Aaron Boone said. “So, it’s been one hiccup for every one of the guys that’s come in succession. Makes it difficult, but we’ve just got to dig in and see where we can make little improvements and expect that the next time out each guy will be sharper.”
Stephen Tarpley was not much better, giving up three runs in the fifth and another in the sixth.
Sandy Leon hit a two-run homer in the eighth, then Bogarts followed with his second of the night, which failed to reach Lansdowne Street only because it clipped the billboard above the Green Monster.
In other results, it was:
‧ Twins 10, White Sox 3
‧ Cardinals 6, Pirates 3
‧ Indians 5, Royals 4, 14 innings
‧ Rangers 11, Athletics 3
‧ Mariners 10, Tigers 2
‧ Mets 4, Padres 0
‧ Rockies 8, Nationals 7
‧ Orioles 10, Angels 8
‘AWFUL PERFORMANCE’: Golden State were always chasing the game after failing to threaten from long range, making just eight of 33 three-point attempts Aaron Gordon on Monday scored 38 points as the Denver Nuggets shrugged off the absence of Nikola Jokic to halt the Golden State Warriors’ seven-game winning streak with a 114-105 victory over their Western Conference rivals. A dazzling display from Gordon inspired what was ultimately a comfortable win for Denver, who were missing regular starters Jokic and Jamal Murray from their lineup. The absentees were barely felt by Denver, who startled the Warriors early at San Francisco’s Chase Center and led for most of the game. The Warriors threatened to stage a late rally after slashing the Nuggets’ fourth-quarter lead from 15 points
The US’ bid for a fourth consecutive CONCACAF Nations League title came to a stunning end as they fell 1-0 to Panama after a stoppage-time goal from Cecilio Waterman on Thursday in Inglewood, California. Despite dominating possession, the US struggled to break down a resilient Panama side for long periods. Panama spent the bulk of the match defending, but pounced on a giveaway by the US before substitute forward Waterman sent a shot from the right side of the area to the bottom left corner late in stoppage time. Up next for Panama in tomorrow’s final is to be Mexico, who beat
DOMINATION: McLaren drivers Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris took the first two spots as Mercedes’ George Russell and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen followed them Australian Oscar Piastri yesterday roared back from season-opening disappointment in his home race by winning the Formula One Chinese Grand Prix from pole position in a McLaren one-two with championship-leading teammate Lando Norris. George Russell finished third for Mercedes, ahead of Red Bull’s reigning champion Max Verstappen with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Saturday’s sprint winner Lewis Hamilton fifth and sixth respectively. Piastri’s win denied Norris a third victory in a row, including last year’s Abu Dhabi season-ender, but left champions McLaren unbeaten in two races so far this year. “Mega job guys. The car was very, very lovely,” Piastri said
Armand Duplantis will be among the reigning Olympic champions adding star power to the world indoor championships this weekend when the Chinese city of Nanjing hosts the first major global athletics meet since the Paris Games last year. The three-day event was originally slated for 2020 and faced multiple postponements due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but Nanjing’s Sports Training Center would finally welcome more than 570 athletes for the start of the showpiece today. One of the main attractions would be pole vaulter “Mondo” Duplantis, who soared 6.27m to break the world record for a staggering 11th time in Clermont-Ferrand last
