Chris Gayle on Thursday failed with the bat, but struck with his tame off-breaks as the West Indies secured just their second win of a chastening Cricket World Cup campaign against Afghanistan.
The Caribbean side scored 311 for six in their 50 overs in Leeds, and although Afghanistan put up a brave fight, they ultimately went down by 23 runs.
Gayle, almost certainly playing in his final World Cup match at the age of 39, trapped Afghanistan top-scorer Ikram Alikhil lbw for 86 in the 36th over to put a huge dent in their slim hopes of victory.

“It’s good to get over the line, we’ve had some close encounters where we didn’t,” West Indies captain Jason Holder said.
“Overall at this tournament, inconsistency let us down, in all three departments,” he added. “Our fielding has to improve a lot.”
Despite the victory, two-time former champions West Indies remain second-bottom of the 10-team table.
Afghanistan have flickered in spells during only their second World Cup — going close against India and Pakistan — but head home with a dispiriting nine defeats out of nine.
The West Indies, who smashed 111 runs of the last 10 overs, had Holder and Nicholas Pooran to thank for their acceleration after solid contributions from Evin Lewis (58), man-of-the-match Shai Hope (77) and Shimron Hetmyer (39).
Gayle was caught behind after a slash against Dawlat Zadran for just seven and remains 10 runs short of Brian Lara’s all-time record for the West Indies of 10,348 one-day international runs.
Pooran picked up where he left off against Sri Lanka, hitting 58 to add to his century in a losing cause earlier this week, Holder smashed a quickfire 45 while Carlos Brathwaite lashed 14 off four balls.
In reply, Alikhil put on 133 for the second wicket with Rahmat Shah (62) and there were notable contributions from Najibullah Zadran and Asghar Afghan, but ultimately Afghanistan did not have the batting firepower to get them over the line.
Fabian Allen took a remarkable diving catch running back from cover to remove Sayed Shirzad and end the innings off the final ball of the match and Gayle led the team off, soaking up the applause.
Paceman Kemar Roach was the pick of the West Indies bowlers, finishing with 3-37 in his 10 overs.
West Indies began the tournament with a seven-wicket win against Pakistan and many tipped them as dark horses for the title, with a power-packed batting lineup and fearsome pace attack.
However, they have been error-prone and lackluster, failing to turn their promising positions into concrete results.
Afghanistan are to head home with more experience under the belts, but with major questions over their batting strength and lack of quality seam bowlers.
Skipper Gulbadin Naib said that the World Cup had been a learning experience for his team, but there was room for improvement.
“Fitness is a big issue — the boys are struggling. Also, we can work more on our skills under pressure,” he said.
MARRED FINAL: As most of Senegalese players walked off the pitch after a controversial decision, some supporters threw objects and attempted to get onto the pitch Senegal on Sunday won the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) as Pape Gueye’s extra-time winner sunk hosts Morocco 1-0 after a chaotic final that saw the eventual champions storm off the pitch late in the game. Brahim Diaz could have won the trophy for Morocco with a controversial spot-kick in the 24th minute of added time at the end of normal time as ugly scenes broke out in the stands. However, Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy easily saved the weak attempted “Panenka” chip by the Real Madrid winger, who was clearly distracted by the long delay that followed the penalty award.
James Harden on Friday scored 31 points and came up big in overtime to help the Los Angeles Clippers erase a double-digit deficit on the way to a 121-117 NBA victory over the Toronto Raptors. Harden scored 16 points in the fourth quarter and overtime as the Clippers pushed their wining steak to five games despite the absence of star Kawhi Leonard with a sprained right ankle. The Clippers trailed by 11 entering the fourth quarter, but Harden drilled a pair of free-throws with 1:24 left in regulation to tie it and after misses from both teams, they went to
Qatar’s Nasser al-Attiyah on Saturday secured his sixth Dakar Rally car title in Saudi Arabia with Luciano Benavides scraping home by two seconds to claim the motorbike title. “We’ve worked very hard since last year. I might not be showing much emotion yet, but it’s there, deep down. We are so happy to win,” al-Attiyah said at the finish. Al-Attiyah, at the wheel of a Dacia, only had to avoid a final day slip-up to top the podium after bringing his career tally of stage wins to 50 on Friday. The 55-year-old, who took clay pigeon shooting bronze at the
Tobias Harris on Monday scored 25 points as the Detroit Pistons held off the Boston Celtics to score a 104-103 victory in their top-of-the-table Eastern Conference showdown. Harris was one of four Detroit players to finish in double figures, with Jalen Duren adding 18 points and point guard Cade Cunningham scoring 16 points with 14 assists. The win sees Detroit extend their lead at the top of the Eastern Conference to 31-10, 5.5 games ahead of second-placed Boston, who fell to 26-16 with the defeat. Jaylen Brown led the Celtics scoring with 32 points and almost snatched victory in the
