Austrian skier Nicole Schmidhofer denied Sofia Goggia a fairytale comeback on Saturday by winning her first World Cup super-G.
Schmidhofer, the super-G world champion, finished 0.23 seconds ahead of Olympic downhill champion Goggia, who was racing for the first time since October when she broke a bone in her right ankle while training.
Goggia returned to training two weeks ago and she said her fibula was not yet fully healed.

Skiing was all right, but “just walking hurts,” she said.
As Schmidhofer finished her run for just her third World Cup victory, the Italian shrugged, lifting her arms with a wry smile.
“I was really happy with the race today, but actually I was really happy anyway,” Goggia said.
“Garmisch is just supposed to be a test for my ankle,” she added.
She said she was going to approach the world championships in Are, Sweden, “without expectations” when they start on Tuesday next week.
Schmidhofer, who won the season’s first two downhills at Lake Louise, Canada, reflected on her own good form.
“You can nearly say this is the best ‘Schmidi’ that we’ve ever seen. I’ve never won three races in one year,” Schmidhofer said.
Lara Gut-Behrami, who had been going for her third consecutive super-G win in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, was third, 0.45 off the pace, followed by Italy’s Federica Brignone and France’s Romane Miradoli.
German skiers fared badly on the Kandahar course, with only two from seven starters crossing the finish line and home favorite Viktoria Rebensburg crashing out.
“A bitter day for us,” said Kira Weidle, who also crashed out.
Lindsey Vonn is skipping the weekend’s races to give her knee injury a chance to recover. Vonn hinted at immediate retirement after failing to finish a super-G in Cortina the previous weekend.
American teammate Mikaela Shiffrin is also taking a break. Shiffrin, the overall World Cup and super-G leader, plans to return in Maribor, Slovenia, next weekend before the world championships.
Manchester United on Tuesday confirmed Michael Carrick as interim manager until the end of the season, tasking him with leading the Red Devils back into the UEFA Champions League. “Having the responsibility to lead Manchester United is an honor,” said Carrick, 44, who won 12 major trophies in his 12-year playing career at United. The former midfielder previously had an unbeaten three-game stint as caretaker boss at Old Trafford in 2021. Carrick then took on his first permanent managerial role at second-tier Middlesbrough in October 2022 and was sacked in June last year after the club finished 10th in the

Mohamed Salah’s Egypt knocked reigning champions Ivory Coast out of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with a 3-2 win in the quarter-finals on Saturday, while Victor Osimhen starred as Nigeria beat Algeria 2-0 to set up a clash with hosts Morocco. In Agadir, Morocco, a thrilling last-eight tie saw Omar Marmoush and Ramy Rabia net in the first half for the Pharaohs before an own goal by Ahmed Aboul-Fetouh brought the Ivorians back into it. Salah then got Egypt’s third early in the second half and they held on after Guela Doue again reduced the deficit. Egypt is to face Senegal
Brandon Miller scored 18 points, LaMelo Ball had 17 and the Charlotte Hornets built a 47-point lead in the first half of a 150-95 rout against the Utah Jazz on Saturday night. It was the second-biggest win in franchise history for the Hornets and their largest on the road. The Hornets bounced back from a pair of frustrating losses in a big way, having fallen to Toronto by one point and Indiana by two in their last two games. Charlotte pounded the NBA champion Thunder by 27 in Oklahoma City before those defeats, previously the Hornets’ most lopsided victory of the season. Tre
