Terence “Bud” Crawford stopped previously unbeaten Jose Benavidez with 18 seconds left in the 12th and final round to retain his WBO welterweight championship on Saturday night.
Crawford had knocked Benavidez to the canvas with a powerful right hand with 46 seconds left, and then Crawford finished him off with consecutive right hands.
After referee Celestino Ruiz stopped the fight, Crawford stuck out his tongue at his fallen opponent, who had made this a personal grudge match with insults he has directed toward Crawford for months.
Next up for Crawford could be a unification bout with IBF champion Errol Spence Jr, something promoter Bob Arum has said that he would like to make happen sometime next year. The only problem is that Spence is promoted by Al Hayman, but Arum has said that would not be insurmountable.
The 31-year-old Crawford (34-0, 25 knockouts), ranked first or second on the world’s top pound-for-pound fighter lists, put on a competent but uninspired performance for the first half of the fight in front of a hometown crowd of 13,000 that included Crawford friend and billionaire Warren Buffett.
Benavidez (27-1, 18 KOs) began tiring in the seventh after taking body shot after body shot from Crawford, who started out in an orthodox stance, but worked most of the fight as a southpaw.
Benavidez, 26, was plenty frisky, motioning for Crawford to keep coming toward him even as it became apparent that Crawford had taken control of the fight, and he showed renewed life in the 10th when he landed a couple shots.
The crowd was on its feet for the 12th round, and “Craw-ford!” “Craw-ford!” chants echoed through the area.
Crawford kept coming in the 12th, and Benavidez could take no more of the steady punishment that the three-division champion doled out in his first title defense at welterweight.
This was more of a stay-busy fight for Crawford, but he was eager to take the bout after being called out by Benavidez, who is only the 10th-ranked 147-pounder by the WBO.
The fighters’ camps on Wednesday last week traded barbs at a media workout and the bickering continued on Thursday at a news conference.
Insults were lobbed both ways during the weigh-in on Friday, with Benavidez shoving Crawford and Crawford taking a swing that narrowly missed.
On the undercard, 2016 Olympian Mikaela Mayer of Los Angeles won a regional super featherweight belt with a unanimous decision over Vanessa Bradford of Edmonton, Canada.
Mayer (8-0, 4 KOs) was the aggressor throughout the eight-round bout, and knocked down Bradford (4-1-2) with a right to the head in the seventh.

This year’s Taiwan Athletics Open, which offers Taiwanese athletes an opportunity to compete against their international peers, would be held under a new name after its organizers had earlier announced the event’s cancelation. In a statement issued yesterday, the Chinese Taipei Athletics Association said the competition would still take place on June 6-7 at Banciao Stadium, but under the name “New Taipei City Athletics Open 2026.” The event was given a new name to emphasize its local identity and conform with the international practice of naming World Athletics Tour events after cities, the association said. It said it would soon
Denmark’s double Olympic badminton champion Viktor Axelsen, long a rival of Taiwan’s former world No. 2 Chou Tien-chen, yesterday announced his retirement at age 32, saying back problems meant he could no longer “compete and train at the highest level.” Axelsen, who won gold at the Tokyo Games in 2021 and again in Paris in 2024, had back surgery in April last year and said he had not overcome his physical issues. “Accepting this situation has been incredibly difficult,” he said in a statement. “But I have now reached a point where my body won’t allow me to continue.” Axelsen retires as one
