Virat Kohli said he was happy that India are well-prepared to take on in-form England when their much-awaited series starts on Tuesday with the first of three Twenty20 internationals.
India on Friday completed the formality of a 2-0 win in Ireland with their biggest ever T20 victory, by 143 runs.
Although they were two one-sided games, India scoring more than 200 in both, the captain said they were ideal preparation.
“We wanted to go into the [England] series with all the guys having a hit and all the bowlers making a contribution, so I’m happy with the batting performances in both innings,” Kohli said.
“Everyone is batting so well, but it’s a good problem to have. Anyone who has been given a chance has grabbed it with both hands and that’s something that’s good for any side and our bench strength is shown in these type of games,” he said. “It’s a great phase that India cricket is going through and I’m happy to see all these young guys taking their chances.”
Siddarth Kaul, who took 21 wickets in the Indian Premier League this year, was on Friday given his debut and took a wicket in his second over.
However, once again it was the spin twins Kuldeep Yadav and player of the series Yuzvendra Chahal who ripped through the Ireland lineup, sharing six wickets as Ireland were bowled out in just 12.3 overs for 70.
K.L. Rahul, who sat out the first match, scored 70 off 36 balls, while Suresh Raina hit 69 off 45 as India totaled 213-4.
Looking ahead to facing England, Kohli was bullish in that anything England do, India will do better.
“The opposition doesn’t matter,” Kohli said. “We focus on our strengths, so if they come hard we have the batting power to go hard as well, plus we have two wrist spinners in our attack, which will be an added advantage we feel.”
“If we play at the best possible intensity, it’s going to be an exciting and competitive series and one we’re looking forward to. England are a quality side, but we have belief in our quality and back the positives when we go on the field,” he said.
“The players have accepted their responsibilities, and for me as a captain that’s really pleasing to see. We can call on anyone at any stage to give their best effort, in fact everyone wants to have a go at the opposition, they want game time, so the credit has to go their players and it takes the load of myself and the management,” he added.
Ireland captain Gary Wilson, who top-scored with 15, admitted that his batsmen rolled over too easily, but they will learn from the games which, to the delight of Cricket Ireland, were played infront of two capacity crowds of almost 10,000.
Major League Baseball (MLB) star Shohei Ohtani wants his former interpreter to hand over hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of baseball cards he says were fraudulently bought using his money. The Los Angeles Dodgers star is also requesting Ippei Mizuhara, who previously pleaded guilty to bank and tax fraud for stealing nearly US$17 million from the unsuspecting athlete, return signed collectible baseball cards depicting Ohtani that were in Mizuhara’s “unauthorized and wrongful possession,” court documents filed on Tuesday said. The legal filing alleges Mizuhara accessed Ohtani’s bank account beginning in about November 2021, changing his security protocols so that he
US skier Mikaela Shiffrin said she sustained an abrasion on her left hip and that something “stabbed” her when she crashed during her second run of an Audi FIS Ski World Cup giant slalom race on Saturday, doing a flip and sliding into the protective fencing. Shiffrin stayed down on the edge of the course for quite some time as the ski patrol attended to her. She was taken off the hill on a sled and waved to the cheering crowd before going to a clinic for evaluation. “Not really too much cause for concern at this point, I just
CLASH OF MANAGERS: Brighton’s Fabian Hurzeler and Russell Martin of Southampton accused each other of disrespect, while both were booked Southampton on Friday were denied a priceless victory by a controversial decision as they drew with hosts Brighton & Hove Albion 1-1 in the Premier League. Kaoru Mitoma spectacularly headed Brighton into a first-half lead and Flynn Downes hammered home an equalizer an hour in. Minutes later teammate Cameron Archer converted a cross from Saints substitute Ryan Fraser. A video assistant referee check of more than four minutes eventually decided that Archer was onside, but then penalized Adam Armstrong, who was offside, but did not touch the ball, for interfering with goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen. “I find it hard to accept,” Southampton manager Russell Martin
