Phil Mickelson was 148 yards away in the middle of the 14th fairway at Augusta National and saw a pin that was set up for birdies.
The trick was getting there.
He wanted to flight a low nine-iron so that it would carry over the first tier and land about four paces short of the hole.

His caddie, Jim “Bones” Mackay, wanted him to take something off a pitching wedge, and Lefty concurred. It landed about 12 feet short, rode the slope and came within inches of going in.
It was not his most famous birdie in 2004, when Mickelson won his first Masters, but it was no less important.
“I think it’s as exciting a hole as any,” Jordan Spieth said.

Spieth had his own adventures there when he won the Masters in 2015. He was in the trees to the right of the 14th green when he slashed at a seven-iron and feared it would run through the green and into all sorts of trouble. Instead, it smacked the pin and settled a few feet away for birdie.
The 14th hole — effectively the halfway point of any back-nine charge at Augusta National — is known as “Chinese Fir.” It originally was called “Spanish Dagger,” although it was anything but that for Sergio Garcia last year. He smartly played the slope for a short birdie putt in the final round to pull within one shot of the lead.
Mickelson also left his mark there in 2010 by holing out for his second straight eagle. Horton Smith might have had the best birdie of all, chipping in from 50 feet when he won the Masters in 1936.
More than any sensational shot, however, the 440-yard (134m) hole is best known for what it does not have: a bunker.
It is the only hole at Augusta National without a bunker, although that was not always the case. There used to be a large bunker down the right side, except that it was so close to the tee that it never came into play. It was eliminated in 1952.
This hole is all about the green.
The large putting surface has huge contours that fall like terraces toward the front from left to right. That is one reason that for two pin positions over the front tier, Justin Rose does not really pay attention to the pin.
“If you hit straight at them, the ball will release 40 feet to the right,” Rose said. “In my yardage book, I have that you have to aim 5 yards left to hit it right. The pin is not the pin. So I have one pin 5 yards left, and one pin 8 yards left. It’s a very clever green.”
The biggest concern is a left pin, because it helps to land on the left side of the pin, but missing the pin to the left is near impossible.
“You know 13 is a birdie hole. You know 15 is a birdie hole, and on Sunday, you know 16 can be a birdie hole,” Rose said. “It’s a fun run at Augusta. Fourteen is one of those holes that offers a birdie opportunity, but par is good. It’s the one hole you’ve got to respect, especially if you get out of position.”
SSC Napoli will have to wait one more week to seal the Serie A title after on Sunday being held to a goalless draw at Parma, while closest rivals Inter drew 2-2 in a dramatic game with SS Lazio. Antonio Conte’s team stayed one point ahead of Inter and were unfortunate not to win after twice striking the woodwork through Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa and Matteo Politano, while Scott McTominay also had a free-kick tipped onto the crossbar. The away side thought they would be handed a chance to take the points from the penalty spot in the 96th minute when David Neres
A stunning Lamine Yamal strike on Thursday helped crown Barcelona La Liga champions with a 2-0 win over local rivals RCD Espanyol, with victory ensuring Real Madrid cannot catch them at the top of the table. Yamal’s effort and Fermin Lopez’s goal took Hansi Flick’s side seven points clear of Los Blancos with two matches remaining, to clinch Barcelona’s 28th title and complete a superb domestic treble. Only the UEFA Champions League title escaped an exciting young Barca side this season, as they won the league for the second time in six years, at Espanyol’s ground again just as in 2022-2023. Back then,
Jannik Sinner on Thursday marched into the semi-finals of the Italian Open after destroying Casper Ruud in straight sets 6-0, 6-1, while Coco Gauff won a marathon three-set battle with China’s Zheng Qinwen to advance to the women’s singles final. American Gauff is to face Italy’s Jasmine Paolini in today’s title match after pulling through 7-6 (7/3), 4-6, 7-6 (7/4) in a match that lasted over three-and-a-half hours. Ruud was supposed to be Sinner’s toughest test in Rome since he came back from his three-month doping ban, as the Norwegian came into the match in hot form on clay after winning in
Omar Marmoush’s stunning long-range strike on Tuesday upstaged Kevin de Bruyne on the Manchester City great’s Etihad farewell. Marmoush let fly from about 30m to put City ahead in their 3-1 win against AFC Bournemouth in the Premier League. The victory moved Pep Guardiola’s team up to third in the standings and left qualification for the UEFA Champions League in their own hands heading into the last round of the season. “It’s really important. To be in the Champions League after what happened [this season] will be really nice,” the City manager said. De Bruyne was making his final home appearance for City before
