Eight months ago, there was the sight of canoeists paddling down the first fairway of this week’s host course for the Houston Open.
Hurricane Harvey had deluged the US’ fourth-largest city and the Golf Club of Houston was submerged under 1.2m of water.
However, the last US tune-up event for next week’s Masters has been restored to championship standard and among those praising the work are US favorites Jordan Spieth and Rickie Fowler.
Reigning The Open Championship title holder Spieth, a Texas native, missed the Houston cut last year, but tees up this week buoyed by memories of sharing second place in 2015, a week before capturing the first of his three major titles.
“I’m excited to be back in Houston for sure and it’s amazing — I haven’t been into the Houston area, but at least this far north — how well it has recovered from the hurricane, this golf course and just the areas right around it,” Spieth said. “The staff has obviously done a beautiful job getting this place ready.”
Fourth-ranked Spieth’s 2015 is in contrast to his results this year, his best result in eight PGA events being ninth place.
Spieth has not won since capturing his latest major in July last year at Royal Birkdale.
“I just haven’t been able to quite do it,” Spieth said. “It’s simple stuff. It’s setup stuff that just got off and I just haven’t quite figured out how to consistently get it back on. I’m getting there, putting a lot of work in. If it comes by this week or next week, great. If it doesn’t, it will come soon.”
“I’ve got 20-plus more years out here and a few months of setup stuff isn’t going to derail too much confidence,” he said. “It has a little bit this year certainly, but I’m in a good place right now where I know I’ve got time on my side and these couple weeks aren’t the be-all, end-all of my career.”
Fowler began the week playing practice rounds at Lochinvar, the Houston home course of his coach, Butch Harmon.
The Californian also undertook some undercoating work in a local community project undertaken to restore homes affected by Hurricane Harvey.
“It has been fun to have a connection with the city and to help out just that little bit following the damage caused by the hurricane,” Fowler said. “I’m not great with the paintbrush, but I’m not bad. I’m above average. I’m going to try and keep making birdies.”
Fowler heads to the Masters with four runner-up showings, plus a third and fourth at the game’s top level.
There is an extra incentive for players such as England’s Ian Poulter who have not qualified for the Masters — the Houston Open winner will take the last available spot if he is not already in the field next week at Augusta National.
A stunning Lamine Yamal strike on Thursday helped crown Barcelona La Liga champions with a 2-0 win over local rivals RCD Espanyol, with victory ensuring Real Madrid cannot catch them at the top of the table. Yamal’s effort and Fermin Lopez’s goal took Hansi Flick’s side seven points clear of Los Blancos with two matches remaining, to clinch Barcelona’s 28th title and complete a superb domestic treble. Only the UEFA Champions League title escaped an exciting young Barca side this season, as they won the league for the second time in six years, at Espanyol’s ground again just as in 2022-2023. SSC Napoli will have to wait one more week to seal the Serie A title after on Sunday being held to a goalless draw at Parma, while closest rivals Inter drew 2-2 in a dramatic game with SS Lazio. Antonio Conte’s team stayed one point ahead of Inter and were unfortunate not to win after twice striking the woodwork through Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa and Matteo Politano, while Scott McTominay also had a free-kick tipped onto the crossbar. The away side thought they would be handed a chance to take the points from the penalty spot in the 96th minute when David Neres
Jannik Sinner on Thursday marched into the semi-finals of the Italian Open after destroying Casper Ruud in straight sets 6-0, 6-1, while Coco Gauff won a marathon three-set battle with China’s Zheng Qinwen to advance to the women’s singles final. American Gauff is to face Italy’s Jasmine Paolini in today’s title match after pulling through 7-6 (7/3), 4-6, 7-6 (7/4) in a match that lasted over three-and-a-half hours. Ruud was supposed to be Sinner’s toughest test in Rome since he came back from his three-month doping ban, as the Norwegian came into the match in hot form on clay after winning in
Shohei Ohtani on Thursday delivered his first two-homer game of the season and had six RBIs as the Los Angeles Dodgers poured it on with five long balls in a 19-2 victory over the visiting Athletics. Max Muncy, Andy Pages and James Outman also hit home runs for the Dodgers, who left no doubt by taking a 13-2 lead following a seven-run third inning. Muncy and Kim Hye-seong each had three hits for Los Angeles. Dodgers right-hander Matt Sauer led off a bullpen game by allowing two runs in four innings. Left-hander Justin Wrobleski (1-1) finished with four scoreless innings after he
