A visibly shaken Antonio Conte and World Cup winner Gianluigi Buffon paid emotional tributes to Davide Astori, who died at the age of 31 on Sunday, describing their Italian compatriot as “fantastic” and “a great guy.”
ACF Fiorentina and Italy international defender Astori was found dead from a suspected heart attack in his hotel room in Udine, where his team were staying ahead of Sunday’s scheduled Serie A game with Udinese.
Astori leaves behind a wife and a two-year-old daughter.
Conte, who coached the defender when he was in charge of the Italy national team, said the player’s death was a “tragedy.”
“This is a tragedy and it really hurts me. It’s very difficult at this moment to find the right words for the family,” Chelsea coach Conte told Sky Sports on Sunday ahead of his team’s English Premier League match at Manchester City. “I had him with the national team. He was a great player, but especially a fantastic guy. I stay close to his wife, parents and daughter. He was only 31 and it’s very difficult to explain this situation.”
Veteran Buffon, the Juventus captain, called Astori “a great man.”
“Farewell dear Asto,” wrote Buffon in a post on Instagram accompanied by a photograph of the two players exchanging pennants before a game between their clubs.
Buffon said he did not usually make a habit of expressing his feelings about others.
“I want to make an exception to my rule because you have a young wife and others close to you who are suffering, but mostly because your little girl deserves to know that her dad was a good man... a great man,” he wrote.
Fiorentina’s game was called off in the morning.
The early kickoff between Genoa and Cagliari, one of Astori’s former clubs, was abandoned when players learned the news while warming up on the pitch.
The other five Serie A matches scheduled for Sunday, including the Milan derby, were also canceled as a mark of respect.
“Fiorentina are profoundly shocked to have to announce the death of captain Davide Astori after a sudden illness,” the Serie A club said on Twitter.
Astori died of “natural causes” after a “cardiac circulatory collapse” — a type of heart attack — Antonio de Nicolo, a Udine magistrate was quoted as saying.
The magistrate added that it was “strange that such a thing happened without any warning symptoms in a profession which is so closely monitored.”
Astori began his career at AC Milan, also playing for Cagliari and AS Roma before joining Fiorentina in 2015.
He played 14 times for Italy.
He made his international debut under coach Cesare Prandelli in March 2011 as a first-half substitute in a 2-0 victory over Ukraine in Kiev, before getting sent off with 17 minutes remaining.
Astori scored his only international goal in the 2013 Confederations Cup third-place playoff against Uruguay.
IN-HOUSE BUSINESS: LA Clippers coach Tyronn Lue said that the reason for the team’s poor form was not due to Paul, but the player was not a good fit for them Chris Paul’s return stint with the Los Angeles Clippers has come to an abrupt and stunning end, with the franchise parting ways with one of its greatest players in a late-night meeting on Wednesday that adds another layer of drama to the team’s terrible start this season. The news was delivered in a meeting in Atlanta, Georgia, that ended at about 2am, Clippers basketball operations president Lawrence Frank said. Frank said he made the decision to sever ties with Paul on Sunday then told the franchise’s career assist leader that he needed to see him on Tuesday in Atlanta. Frank did not confirm
Kylian Mbappe on Wednesday scored twice and had an assist as Real Madrid beat Athletic Bilbao 3-0 to end a three-match winless streak in La Liga. Eduardo Camavinga also found the net for Madrid as they moved back within one point of Barcelona, who beat Atletico Madrid 3-1 on Tuesday. Both 19th-round matches were moved forward because Real Madrid, Barcelona, Athletic Club and Atletico Madrid are to play in the Supercopa de Espana semi-finals in Saudi Arabia next month. Real Madrid were coming off league draws against Girona, Elche and Rayo Vallecano. It was their second win in their past six matches in

Spain were without three-time Ballon d’Or winner Aitana Bonmati, who broke her leg in training on Sunday. Lopez took Bonmati’s place and Spain dominated from the start. There was another win for Arsenal in the Premier League on Wednesday, but more misery for Liverpool and their under-fire manager, Arne Slot. While Arsenal accelerated their title charge with a 2-0 victory over Brentford to regain a five-point lead, Liverpool needed a late own-goal just to salvage a 1-1 draw with Sunderland AFC at Anfield. Slot is back under pressure, with his team languishing in eighth place in a disappointing title defense and his decision to leave star forward Mohamed Salah out of the starting lineup for a second straight game likely to be heavily scrutinized. “It’s clear that teams that play
