India made a strong reply to England’s first-innings total of 477 after half-centuries by debutant Liam Dawson and No. 9 Adil Rashid underlined the tourists’ batting depth in the fifth and final Test yesterday.
India claimed three wickets on the second morning, but the 108-run partnership between Dawson and Rashid in a productive second session for the touring side frustrated the hosts.
India’s Murali Vijay hurt his shoulder while fielding and could not come out to bat, but the makeshift opening pair of Lokesh Rahul and Parthiv Patel did a decent job, adding 60 runs without being separated.

Rahul was unbeaten on 30 at stumps and the right-hander will be eager to make amends with the bat having on Friday dropped centurion Moeen Ali before he had scored.
Patel was on 29 at the other end with India, who have an unassailable 3-0 lead in the series, 417 runs behind on a pitch that has grown easier to bat on.
Earlier, resuming on 284-4, England got an early jolt when Ravichandran Ashwin struck with the day’s fifth delivery at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium.
The leading wicket-taker in the series had endured a rare wicketless day on Friday, but he lured Ben Stokes onto the front foot to edge a fuller delivery which Parthiv Patel caught behind the stumps.
Paceman Ishant Sharma trapped Jos Buttler LBW for 5 while Moeen, who resumed on 120, looked ill at ease against the short-pitched deliveries.
The left-hander virtually walked into a trap when Umesh Yadav forced him into playing a pull shot, which the batsman mistimed to find Ravindra Jadeja at deep-midwicket.
Moeen faced 262 deliveries for his 146, hitting 13 fours and a six.
Dawson endured a tough Test initiation, the second ball he faced from Sharma smacking him on his helmet, but the 26-year-old grew in confidence as he and Rashid shared the second century-plus stand of the England innings.
Rashid hit eight fours before edging Yadav to Patel for 60.
Dawson was stranded on 66 not out, including five fours and a six, when Amit Mishra bowled Jake Ball with a googly.
The teams head into a three-match one-day series after this Test.

‘AWFUL PERFORMANCE’: Golden State were always chasing the game after failing to threaten from long range, making just eight of 33 three-point attempts Aaron Gordon on Monday scored 38 points as the Denver Nuggets shrugged off the absence of Nikola Jokic to halt the Golden State Warriors’ seven-game winning streak with a 114-105 victory over their Western Conference rivals. A dazzling display from Gordon inspired what was ultimately a comfortable win for Denver, who were missing regular starters Jokic and Jamal Murray from their lineup. The absentees were barely felt by Denver, who startled the Warriors early at San Francisco’s Chase Center and led for most of the game. The Warriors threatened to stage a late rally after slashing the Nuggets’ fourth-quarter lead from 15 points
The US’ bid for a fourth consecutive CONCACAF Nations League title came to a stunning end as they fell 1-0 to Panama after a stoppage-time goal from Cecilio Waterman on Thursday in Inglewood, California. Despite dominating possession, the US struggled to break down a resilient Panama side for long periods. Panama spent the bulk of the match defending, but pounced on a giveaway by the US before substitute forward Waterman sent a shot from the right side of the area to the bottom left corner late in stoppage time. Up next for Panama in tomorrow’s final is to be Mexico, who beat
Barcelona’s Ferran Torres scored twice on Sunday to help secure a late 4-2 comeback win at Atletico Madrid in a pulsating La Liga clash that took the Catalan side back to the top of the table. Barca have 60 points and a game in hand after last week’s postponement of their home game with CA Osasuna. They are level on points with Real Madrid, who won 2-1 at Villarreal on Saturday. “I am happy and proud of this team,” Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick told a news conference. “They never give up... It’s a great three points and we are happy to
