Australia’s tempestuous talent Nick Kyrgios has the potential to be a future Grand Slam champion, but could just as easily be lost to the sport if he fails to get the support he needs, former Wimbledon champion Pat Cash said.
The 21-year-old was suspended for eight weeks by the ATP on Monday following his second-round exit at the Shanghai Masters, where he clashed with fans, the chair umpire and walked off the court midway through a point against Mischa Zverev.
The ban can be reduced to three weeks if he sees a sports psychologist, which Kyrgios has committed to, Tennis Australia said.

“I wouldn’t be surprised [if he quit], but hopefully that’s not the case,” Cash told radio station 3AW. “Anybody’s got the opportunity to walk away, but if it’s not good for his health then I think he should do that. But with some good things in place for his health and well-being, and a revised schedule ... he can go out there and enjoy his tennis, which is what we want to see.”
Kyrgios posted a lengthy apology online after his Shanghai meltdown, which came only days after he won the Japan Open.
The 51-year-old Cash said Kyrgios was “flat and exhausted” when he arrived in Shanghai and should never have played.
He questioned the advice the Canberra native was receiving on Tour and claimed Tennis Australia had failed to provide young players with the required mental support.
“Mental health and understanding of where you are as a junior should be as mandatory as hitting forehands and doing stretching before and after a practice session,” Cash said. “I’ve talked to Tennis Australia about it and nothing has been done.”
Tennis Australia dismissed Cash’s criticism as “incorrect,” saying psychologists were available for players in every state.
“Sometimes they have access to two or three of them,” spokesman Todd Woodbridge said. “Tennis Australia’s support is as strong, if not stronger, than for any other [sport] in the country.”
Cash said Kyrgios was “the next guy” in line for Grand Slam glory once proven winners such as Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic bow out.
“And who is standing up there? Well, Nick’s the obvious one,” he said. “You tend to see after a great year, a bit of a lull, and [then] he’s got a great opportunity to grab a couple of Grand Slam titles and really be a success.”
BOUNCE BACK: Curry scored 46 points in the Warriors’ victory over the Spurs, after ‘everybody stepped up’ following Tuesday’s blowout loss to Oklahoma City Nikola Jokic scoring 50 or more points had never been enough for the Denver Nuggets to win — until now. Jokic on Wednesday night tied the highest-scoring performance in the NBA this season with 55 points, as the Nuggets beat the Los Angeles Clippers 130-116 for their sixth straight victory. The Nuggets were 0-4 in his previous 50-point outbursts. “It’s a good feeling,” the three-time NBA Most Valuable Player said. He equaled Oklahoma City Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who had 55 in a double-overtime game at the Indiana Pacers on Oct. 23. Jokic has been on a roll during Denver’s winning streak. He is the

In an unexpected thriller, the NBA’s second-best team barely outlasted a Wizards club that fell to an NBA-worst 1-10 with their ninth consecutive loss. “We knew how big this game was for us,” Jenkins said. “We wasn’t going to let nothing stop us from getting this W.” Cunningham made 14-of-45 shots and 16-of-18 free throws for a career-high 46 points, and added 12 rebounds, 11 assists, five steals and two
The tri-nation Twenty20 international series featuring hosts Pakistan, as well as Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe, is to be played entirely in Rawalpindi from Tuesday next week, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said yesterday, after this week’s suicide bombing in the capital, Islamabad. The change came after at least eight Sri Lankan players asked to leave over security fears following Tuesday’s bombing that killed 12 people and wounded 27. Their country’s cricket board issued a stern directive to the team to stay put or face consequences. Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) said the decision to stay was taken after “close consultations” with hosts Pakistan who
