Frenchman Lilian Calmejane on Tuesday claimed his first-ever professional stage win by breaking clear on a steep category two climb at the end the fourth stage of the Vuelta a Espana.
Calmejane finished the 163.5km ride from Betanzos to San Andres de Teixido in a time of 4 hours, 5 minutes, 19 seconds, ahead of Colombia’s Darwin Atapuma, who took over the overall lead of the race, with the US’ Benjamin King third.
Atapuma leads by 29 seconds from Alejandro Valverde, with Tour de France champion Chris Froome four seconds further back in third.
All of the favorites for the overall title, including Valverde, Froome, Nairo Quintana and Alberto Contador, finished together two minutes and six seconds back on the day after an early breakaway was never caught by the peloton.
“This jersey is a dream I still haven’t taken in, but it’s been a dream come true,” BMC Racing’s Atapuma said. “I came hoping to do well and I have to thank my teammates for working for me. I wanted to win a stage, but there are still days ahead and we hope to have the jersey for as long as possible, as well as looking for a stage win that I hope will come soon, above all putting on a good show.”
“No doubt Samu [Samuel Sanchez] is the team leader, but today they gave me freedom and we were alert to the breakaway and completed our goal,” he added.
Calmejane and Atapuma were in a group of 21 riders that broke clear of the peloton after the first of two category three climbs in the first half of the stage.
Having accumulated a more than sufficient lead to ensure they would not be caught, a series of attacks splintered the lead group on the climb up to Mirador Vixia de Herbeira.
However, it was Calmejane’s attack that stuck, as he moved into the lead with 9km left and stayed clear to the finish.
“It’s a very great feeling. To win a stage so early in the Vuelta is just awesome,” he told Eurosport. “Today, in my head was just the breakaway and to have no regrets. I saw [Thomas] De Gendt was very strong in the group, so I attacked. When I was alone, first in the race, I gave everything and it is wonderful. The goal was to win a stage, so now everything from here is a bonus.”
Manchester United on Tuesday confirmed Michael Carrick as interim manager until the end of the season, tasking him with leading the Red Devils back into the UEFA Champions League. “Having the responsibility to lead Manchester United is an honor,” said Carrick, 44, who won 12 major trophies in his 12-year playing career at United. The former midfielder previously had an unbeaten three-game stint as caretaker boss at Old Trafford in 2021. Carrick then took on his first permanent managerial role at second-tier Middlesbrough in October 2022 and was sacked in June last year after the club finished 10th in the
Dallas Mavericks rookie Cooper Flagg on Wednesday was ruled out for the second half of their 118-109 loss to the Denver Nuggets after the No. 1 pick sprained his left ankle in the first half. Flagg limped to the bench and continued to the locker room, but returned for the final 2 minutes, 35 seconds before the break. The 19-year-old did not come out for the second half before the announcement that
Yassine Bounou on Wednesday saved two penalties, while Youssef en-Nesyri netted the decisive spot-kick as hosts Morocco secured a 4-2 shoot-out victory over Nigeria following a 0-0 draw in a tense Africa Cup of Nations semi-final in Rabat. Morocco, seeking their first continental title in 50 years, are to face 2021 winners Senegal in Sunday’s decider in Rabat, while Nigeria take on Egypt in the third-place playoff tomorrow. The 120 minutes before the shoot-out had few clear-cut chances for either side, but it was Morocco who created more opportunities, although they were denied by some fine saves from Nigeria goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali.
