Kyrie Irving took one last shot on a flight home from the NBA Finals, hoping LeBron James would play in the Olympics.
James is not going to Rio, and neither are many more of basketball’s best players.
The US think they would be just fine with who they have.
“We should be heavily favored,” the Golden State Warriors’ Klay Thompson said. “I mean, 12 NBA stars, very unselfish guys, very versatile team, we definitely should be favored. It is a disappointment if we do not win gold.”
The US selected its roster on Monday, led by Kevin Durant and Carmelo Anthony, hoping they can win for the third straight time.
Durant and Anthony are the only players with Olympic experience after a number of stars, including James, decided to skip Rio.
Also chosen were: Golden State’s Draymond Green and Harrison Barnes; the Toronto Raptors’ Kyle Lowry and DeMar DeRozan; the Indiana Pacers’ Paul George; the Chicago Bulls’ Jimmy Butler; the Sacramento Kings’ DeMarcus Cousins; and the Los Angeles Clippers’ DeAndre Jordan.
Irving was the Most Valuable Player of the 2014 Basketball World Cup on a US team that included Thompson, Cousins and DeRozan, and easily won gold.
The US should roll into Rio as favorites. Yet they might not look as imposing as expected after the withdrawals of NBA MVP Stephen Curry and All-Stars such as Russell Westbrook, Chris Paul and James Harden.
“As far as the talent goes and the level of play, I am pretty sure that that is still going to be the same,” Anthony said. “We do not have as many of the big-name guys that we have had before, but I think, so far, this is a great group of guys and they are hungry. They want to play.”
USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo said having a national team pool, which he began in 2005, always has the US ready for player losses. There were 31 players in this year’s and he had to go deep into it — and eventually even beyond it — to find 12, as the usual factors that can knock players out were joined by the Zika virus and other concerns in Brazil.
Anthony said he talked to doctors and people who have been to Brazil about the risks of the mosquito-borne virus.
“Prior to this year, in the past, we dealt with things like free agency, injuries, personal issues that might prevent someone from moving forward. This year it was exacerbated by circumstances beyond anyone’s control and that was the reality, the speculation and the circumstance in Rio,” Colangelo said. “So somewhat more challenging, but at the end of the day, and this is important: This is not about who is not here, this is about who is here.”
Anthony becomes the first US men’s basketball player to appear in four Olympics. Durant set a US record by averaging 19.5 points in London and was also the MVP when the US won the 2010 world championship.
“Shoot, when you are playing with the best players in the world, it makes it easy,” Durant said. “I am just going out there and playing my game. They take all the pressure off of me.”
Duke University coach Mike Krzyzewski is to coach the US for the third and final time, tying Henry Iba’s team record. He is to lead a team with strong NBA credentials — nine were All-Stars this season — but a little short on international experience after the withdrawals.
James would have joined Anthony with a fourth selection. He pulled out last week after leading the Cleveland Cavaliers to the NBA championship.
Irving said winning a gold medal would be even sweeter, and he attempted to convince James to chase it with him.
“Hey, I tried,” Irving said. “I tried to get him to come and after we won the championship told him — I was kind of nudging him on the plane, I was like: ‘So are going to play USA?’ He just did not know at the time and I gave him a lot of space because, I mean, he has been playing basketball every single year for a long length of time.”
The heaviest losses came at the point guard spot, where Curry passed on making his Olympic debut after knee and ankle injuries in the playoffs. Former Olympians Paul and Westbrook also pulled out and what was a position of strength became so depleted that Lowry was added last week even though he was not even a member of the pool.
However, Colangelo focused on the strength of the team that was selected, adding he and Krzyzewski are excited about the challenge of working with new faces.
“Their credentials speak for themselves and now it is just a matter of coach having some time with the group, because there is so many new people, just getting everyone to blend in,” Colangelo said.
BOUNCE BACK: Curry scored 46 points in the Warriors’ victory over the Spurs, after ‘everybody stepped up’ following Tuesday’s blowout loss to Oklahoma City Nikola Jokic scoring 50 or more points had never been enough for the Denver Nuggets to win — until now. Jokic on Wednesday night tied the highest-scoring performance in the NBA this season with 55 points, as the Nuggets beat the Los Angeles Clippers 130-116 for their sixth straight victory. The Nuggets were 0-4 in his previous 50-point outbursts. “It’s a good feeling,” the three-time NBA Most Valuable Player said. He equaled Oklahoma City Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who had 55 in a double-overtime game at the Indiana Pacers on Oct. 23. Jokic has been on a roll during Denver’s winning streak. He is the
TIGHT GAME: The Detroit Pistons, the NBA’s second-best team, barely outlasted the Washington Wizards, who fell to an NBA-worst 1-10 with their ninth consecutive loss Cade Cunningham’s triple double, Daniss Jenkins’ three-pointer at the buzzer and Javonte Green’s overtime dunk lifted Detroit past Washington 137-135 on Monday, stretching the Pistons’ win streak to seven games. In an unexpected thriller, the NBA’s second-best team barely outlasted a Wizards club that fell to an NBA-worst 1-10 with their ninth consecutive loss. “We knew how big this game was for us,” Jenkins said. “We wasn’t going to let nothing stop us from getting this W.” Cunningham made 14-of-45 shots and 16-of-18 free throws for a career-high 46 points, and added 12 rebounds, 11 assists, five steals and two
The tri-nation Twenty20 international series featuring hosts Pakistan, as well as Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe, is to be played entirely in Rawalpindi from Tuesday next week, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said yesterday, after this week’s suicide bombing in the capital, Islamabad. The change came after at least eight Sri Lankan players asked to leave over security fears following Tuesday’s bombing that killed 12 people and wounded 27. Their country’s cricket board issued a stern directive to the team to stay put or face consequences. Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) said the decision to stay was taken after “close consultations” with hosts Pakistan who
Italian champions SSC Napoli on Sunday came unstuck at Bologna, losing 2-0 to cede the Italian Serie A summit to Inter, who downed SS Lazio by the same scoreline. AS Roma, who beat Udinese 2-0 earlier, briefly held the summit, only for Inter to dislodge them on goal difference. With the game just three minutes old, Lautaro Martinez put Inter in control with Ange-Yoan Bonny doubling the lead on the hour with a shot from close range. Goals in the capital either side of the break by Lorenzo Pellegrini and Zeki Celik sent Gian Piero Gasperini’s Roma temporarily to the
