The Wallabies’ two World Cup wins have long stood as Australia’s proudest achievements in rugby, but the nation’s dominant women’s sevens team hope to set a new benchmark by winning gold at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics.
The team on Sunday captured Australia’s first World Series title, finishing runners-up in the final event in the French university town of Clermont-Ferrand.
Plaudits have come thick and fast from sports-mad Australia, with Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull among the fans offering congratulations through social media.

The win might have seemed a good enough excuse to open a few bottles of choice French wine, but with the Olympics on the horizon the players opted to toast their win over a sober breakfast of crepes in a central Clermont-Ferrand cafe.
“No sore heads,” head coach Tim Walsh told reporters in a telephone interview. “When it was 100 days to go to Rio, all the girls made a little pact on how to prepare.”
“We’ve been going on for three years now, we don’t want to be wasting days, whether through not eating right or just not looking after the body, and after the sevens tournament, everyone’s just so wrecked,” Walsh said.
Australia’s men have long been one of the world’s major powers in the 15-man game, winning the 1991 and 1999 World Cups and reaching the final of last year’s tournament in England.
However, in sevens it is the country’s women who are the gold standard and offer a far greater hope of a medal when the format makes its Olympic debut at Rio.
Mounting the podium at the end of the three-day tournament at Rio’s Deodoro Stadium would be a great reward for a team and staff who have worked tirelessly over the past three years, Walsh said.
However, more importantly, it would inspire a generation of girls in Australia and change the way people perceive female athletes.
“These girls are pioneering,” said 37-year-old Walsh, a former flyhalf for the top-flight Queensland Reds in Super Rugby.
“They really are fantastic role models. This result and the Olympics is a catalyst to driving the game,” he said. “The girls, the staff and the whole program is about rebranding women’s rugby.”
“These girls are elite Olympians, they’re full-time athletes, physically fit, they travel the world, they play a contact sport which isn’t associated with women too much,” he added.
Apart from winning three out of the five World Series events, the team also ended New Zealand’s three-year reign as champions, delighting a nation whose men have long been shaded by the All Blacks in the traditional format.
The women have been well-supported by the Australian Rugby Union, which battles to prop up cash-strapped professional teams in Super Rugby, but has been able to lavish resources on the sevens programs due to extra government funding made available for Olympic sports.
A medal in Rio would help ensure the game’s future and Walsh said his team had developed a winning mentality, which would put them well within reach of that goal.
“One of the important factors for athletes as well is not just the competition, but to have the winning experience as well,” he said.
“In the team now, there are some girls who have been involved in all six of our tournaments. Really, the whole squad now has had some winning experience,” he added.
Walsh also said he hoped world rugby would look to bridge the gap between the men’s and women’s series.
There are five women’s events on the calendar, half the number for the men, and the series ran separately barring a joint tournament at the Dubai opener in December last year.
Walsh said the women’s tournament deserved to share the billing with the men’s and have an equal number of events.
“Again, it’s about cracking that identity of women in rugby,” he said. “We’re well on the front foot to projecting a new identity.”
BOUNCE BACK: Curry scored 46 points in the Warriors’ victory over the Spurs, after ‘everybody stepped up’ following Tuesday’s blowout loss to Oklahoma City Nikola Jokic scoring 50 or more points had never been enough for the Denver Nuggets to win — until now. Jokic on Wednesday night tied the highest-scoring performance in the NBA this season with 55 points, as the Nuggets beat the Los Angeles Clippers 130-116 for their sixth straight victory. The Nuggets were 0-4 in his previous 50-point outbursts. “It’s a good feeling,” the three-time NBA Most Valuable Player said. He equaled Oklahoma City Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who had 55 in a double-overtime game at the Indiana Pacers on Oct. 23. Jokic has been on a roll during Denver’s winning streak. He is the
TIGHT GAME: The Detroit Pistons, the NBA’s second-best team, barely outlasted the Washington Wizards, who fell to an NBA-worst 1-10 with their ninth consecutive loss Cade Cunningham’s triple double, Daniss Jenkins’ three-pointer at the buzzer and Javonte Green’s overtime dunk lifted Detroit past Washington 137-135 on Monday, stretching the Pistons’ win streak to seven games. In an unexpected thriller, the NBA’s second-best team barely outlasted a Wizards club that fell to an NBA-worst 1-10 with their ninth consecutive loss. “We knew how big this game was for us,” Jenkins said. “We wasn’t going to let nothing stop us from getting this W.” Cunningham made 14-of-45 shots and 16-of-18 free throws for a career-high 46 points, and added 12 rebounds, 11 assists, five steals and two
The tri-nation Twenty20 international series featuring hosts Pakistan, as well as Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe, is to be played entirely in Rawalpindi from Tuesday next week, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said yesterday, after this week’s suicide bombing in the capital, Islamabad. The change came after at least eight Sri Lankan players asked to leave over security fears following Tuesday’s bombing that killed 12 people and wounded 27. Their country’s cricket board issued a stern directive to the team to stay put or face consequences. Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) said the decision to stay was taken after “close consultations” with hosts Pakistan who
Australian restaurant chain Grill’d has made a cheeky apology for putting a “curse” on Oscar Piastri’s Formula One title hopes with their offer of a free burger for every time the McLaren driver gets on the podium. The Melbourne native has not finished in the top three since the promotion relaunched five races ago, losing the championship lead to teammate Lando Norris and now 24 points behind. Online conspiracy theorists have been quick to put two and two together. The chain’s Piastri 81 Burger debuted ahead of the Australian Grand Prix in March, with his endorsement, and was relaunched in September after he
