Soccer was accused of having a “cultural problem” as former England international Adam Johnson was sentenced to six years in prison for unlawful sexual activity with a 15-year-old fan.
Johnson, once a winger with Sunderland and Manchester City, was found guilty on Thursday following an incident in his Range Rover car in County Durham, England, last year.
It has become increasingly commonplace to hear English soccer fans voicing their disillusionment with the cash-rich Premier League.

One criticism is that in paying the likes of Johnson a weekly wage of £60,000 (US$84,675), more than three times the average annual salary in the town where they play, clubs such as northeast side Sunderland have created a generation of spoilt players, who then expect to be indulged off the field as well.
It was a view that found echoes in a letter sent by Britain’s National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) children’s charity to Football Association chairman Greg Dyke on Thursday.
“The NSPCC’s concern lies not in the behavior of a single individual — although that is horrifying — but in the approach taken by Sunderland... We are worried this could be a cultural problem within football as a whole,” NSPCC chief executive Peter Wanless wrote.
Johnson, 28, was fired by Sunderland straight after his guilty plea.
However, the fallout saw Sunderland chief executive Margaret Byrne resign on March 8 after she accepted making a “serious mistake” in being party to letting Johnson play on for nearly a year.
Gordon Taylor, the chief executive of England’s Professional Footballers’ Association, said his organization took child protection seriously and that his members were aware of “danger zones” involving young female fans.
“Of course there will be times when there are danger zones. With young women, particularly girls, then that’s even more dangerous. So they [footballers] need to be very, very mindful and there’s a line beyond which they just do not cross,” said Taylor, who added the PFA needed to “work even harder on these child protection and safeguarding issues.”
Taylor said Johnson’s chances of playing professionally again were “very remote,” a view backed up by the experience of former Wales striker Ched Evans.
Evans, currently appealing against his conviction for raping a 19-year-old woman, was released from prison in October 2014. He then saw an attempt to resurrect his career with third-tier club Oldham Athletic collapse amid a public outcry.
That Johnson was later revealed, when reporting restrictions were lifted, to have also been arrested for possessing extreme pornography is unlikely to have shocked fans who have grown used to lurid tales involving soccer players.
Star France striker Karim Benzema, cleared on all charges in an underage sex trial in Paris two years ago, was indefinitely suspended from international duty in December last year after he was placed under investigation over an attempt to bribe France teammate Mathieu Valbuena for a sex tape.
Inter on Sunday were given a letoff when they snatched a late 1-1 derby draw with AC Milan, while league leaders SSC Napoli were held by a late goal at AS Roma. Reigning champions Inter remain three points behind Napoli, who looked to be heading five clear as they led in Rome until Angelino volleyed in a stunning leveler in the first minute of stoppage-time. Angelino’s strike gave even more significance to Stefan de Vrij’s last-gasp equalizer at the San Siro. The defender forced home Nicola Zalewski’s knockdown just as it looked like Tijjani Reijnders’ opener would be enough for Milan. “I can
The Washington Capitals and Winnipeg Jets on Saturday did not disappoint in a thrilling midseason matchup in front of a fired-up sellout crowd of more than 18,500 fans. The top two teams in the NHL delivered with a combined nine goals, including the 877th of Alex Ovechkin’s career to put him 18 back of breaking Wayne Gretzky’s record. That tied the score, the Jets pulled it out in overtime and just about everyone involved got their money’s worth out of the 5-4 game. “We knew how we were both sitting in the standings and both having real good years,” Winnipeg coach Scott

In pursuit of their third straight promotion, Wrexham AFC splashed some cash at League One rival Reading to secure the services of striker Sam Smith. The Welsh club owned by actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney confirmed the signing of the 26-year-old Smith on Friday. He is one of the top scorers in the third division. The transfer fee was not disclosed, but British media widely reported it to be about £2 million (US$2.48 million) — not extravagant, but a hefty price at this level and it would be about the same figure that
Less than a week after splashing out a world-record fee for Naomi Girma, Chelsea has spent big again to bring England midfielder Keira Walsh back to the English Women’s Super League. Walsh left European champions Barcelona after more than two years to join Chelsea for a reported £400,000 (US$496,000) on Friday. Walsh was the world’s most expensive player for two years after moving to Barcelona from Manchester City for a reported £400,000 in 2022. That status now belongs to Girma, the US defender who cost Chelsea a reported £900,000 to sign from the San Diego Wave. Still, it means 27-year-old Walsh — a technically
