The Taipei Predators, the nation’s only American football team, is to play the Hong Kong Warhawks in Taipei today, their first battle against a team from overseas since their formation at the end of last year.
This is to be the second football competition to take place in Taiwan.
The first was in July 1994, when the then-newly formed United Football League (UFL) brought North American players to Taiwan for 30 exhibition games.
The UFL was a six-team Asian league, with the team representing Taiwan called the Taipei Dragons.
However, the Dragons’ players were all from the US.
Predators spokesperson Dennis Lin said the Predators have 40 members, and only three of them hail from other nations. The ages of his teammates range from 19 to their early 30s.
Members of the team also come from different walks of life. Quarterback Noah Yeh works in the high-tech sector, where captain and wide receiver Chen Kuan-wen is an administrative assistant. Chen played in football teams in Japan.
Linebacker James Hsu is a student at Soochow University.
Lin said that most of the team’s players used to play flag football, in which the defense must remove a flag from the ball carrier to end a down.
To be able to play full-tackle, Lin said that they had to import gear from the US, with the shipment taking three months.
Asked how they practice with no other teams to play against, Lin said that the Predators divide into offense and defense and practice different tactics from their playbook.
“We have someone record games for us and we review the videos afterward to see what we can do to improve,” he said. “We also go online to find information on different tactics.”
The team also hope that the game will draw more people to play football, Lin said.
“Most people think that football is a violent and high-risk sport, but the game involves the use of physical strength and various game strategies as well,” he said.
The Hong Kong Warhawks formed in 2012. They made it to the semi-finals of the American Football League of China last year.
The game between the Predators and Warhawks is to begin at 1pm at the Bailing Sport Park in Taipei’s Shilin District.
HATS OFF: After Sinner became the first man to beat the Serbian in a singles match at the Davis Cup since 2011, Djokovic said all he could do was congratulate his opponent A “proud” Jannik Sinner on Saturday beat world No. 1 Novak Djokovic twice in one day to send Italy into the Davis Cup final with a 2-1 win over Serbia in Malaga. David Benavidez on Saturday retained the interim world super middleweight belt by stopping Demetrius Andrade after the sixth round, while in Ireland, Katie Taylor avenged her only professional loss by beating Chantelle Cameron in a majority decision to become a two-weight undisputed champion. In what was billed as clash of styles that could go the distance between unbeaten 168-pounders (76.2kg), Benavidez (28-0, 24 KOs) looked more like a clinician with a dominating performance before Andrade’s corner requested the stoppage after the sixth round in Las Vegas. Andrade (32-1) suffered the first loss of his career. Benavidez is widely recognized as the world’s best
AC Milan starlet Francesco Camarda on Saturday made history after becoming the youngest player to compete in Serie A during their 1-0 win over ACF Fiorentina. Attacker Camarda took to the field in the 83rd minute at Stadio Giuseppe Meazza aged 15 years, eight months and 15 days, replacing Luka Jovic. “He’s got a lot of talent and intelligence, he knows that he needs to work harder than everyone else,” Milan captain Davide Calabria said after the match. Camarda, who made headlines when he scored a bicycle kick against Paris Saint-Germain in the UFA Youth League, had little to do as Milan largely
Connor Ingram on Saturday made 34 saves for his first shutout of the season and second in the NHL, while Clayton Keller broke a scoreless tie with 8 minutes, 22 seconds left for the Arizona Coyotes to blank the Vegas Golden Knights 2-0. Lawson Crouse added an empty-net goal with 1:17 left, his 10th goal this month and of the season. He has scored in five of his past six games. Ingram’s first NHL shutout was on Feb. 15 against the Tampa Bay Lightning. “I think I saw everything today, which is huge in this league,” Ingram said. “If you see it most
