Brendon McCullum’s dismissal in the final over of the day put Australia firmly in control of the first Test in Wellington, New Zealand, yesterday as the hosts were reduced to 178-4, still 201 runs behind the tourists’ mammoth first innings of 562.
Trapped leg before wicket by Mitchell Marsh for 10, the captain’s wicket all but ended New Zealand’s hopes of saving the Test at the end of the third day’s play.
Debutant Henry Nicholls was on 31 and was to be joined by Corey Anderson when play resumes today.

McCullum scored 302 and batted for almost 13 hours to save his team against India on the same ground two years ago, but was unable to mount any sort of a rescue against Australia.
The 34-year-old appeared anxious and was almost caught behind the wicket twice before all-rounder Marsh removed him with three balls left before stumps.
Adam Voges earlier scored his second Test double-century to drive Australia to a 379-run first-innings lead.
The late-blooming Voges, who was 35 when he made his debut in the Caribbean in June last year, has scored 1,267 runs in a bountiful Test career to date, boasting an average of 97.46.
“I’m giving myself every chance to get in each time I bat and when I do get in I’m hungry to score big runs,” Voges told reporters. “It has been a great day to get to 200 and to get us into a great position is a very satisfying feeling.”
New Zealand’s second innings had begun promisingly enough with Tom Latham and Martin Guptill putting on 81 for the first wicket.
However, Guptill’s fall for 45 appeared a wasted chance as he had looked well set before slogging off-spinner Nathan Lyon to Marsh at extra-cover.
Kane Williamson and Latham took their side through to tea, but Williamson fell shortly afterwards for 22 when he feathered a Josh Hazlewood delivery through to wicketkeeper Peter Nevill.
Latham also wasted a golden opportunity to push on when he fell to a poor shot off Lyon for 63 after notching his seventh half-century.
“There are a couple of guys who would be disappointed with their dismissal, but they batted well,” New Zealand batting coach Craig McMillan said. “We want the guys to show intent and be aggressive, but sometimes that can go wrong. Sometimes those dismissals look worse than others, but for me as long as the guys show the positive intent we will be better off for it.”
A stunning Lamine Yamal strike on Thursday helped crown Barcelona La Liga champions with a 2-0 win over local rivals RCD Espanyol, with victory ensuring Real Madrid cannot catch them at the top of the table. Yamal’s effort and Fermin Lopez’s goal took Hansi Flick’s side seven points clear of Los Blancos with two matches remaining, to clinch Barcelona’s 28th title and complete a superb domestic treble. Only the UEFA Champions League title escaped an exciting young Barca side this season, as they won the league for the second time in six years, at Espanyol’s ground again just as in 2022-2023. SSC Napoli will have to wait one more week to seal the Serie A title after on Sunday being held to a goalless draw at Parma, while closest rivals Inter drew 2-2 in a dramatic game with SS Lazio. Antonio Conte’s team stayed one point ahead of Inter and were unfortunate not to win after twice striking the woodwork through Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa and Matteo Politano, while Scott McTominay also had a free-kick tipped onto the crossbar. The away side thought they would be handed a chance to take the points from the penalty spot in the 96th minute when David Neres
Jannik Sinner on Thursday marched into the semi-finals of the Italian Open after destroying Casper Ruud in straight sets 6-0, 6-1, while Coco Gauff won a marathon three-set battle with China’s Zheng Qinwen to advance to the women’s singles final. American Gauff is to face Italy’s Jasmine Paolini in today’s title match after pulling through 7-6 (7/3), 4-6, 7-6 (7/4) in a match that lasted over three-and-a-half hours. Ruud was supposed to be Sinner’s toughest test in Rome since he came back from his three-month doping ban, as the Norwegian came into the match in hot form on clay after winning in
Shohei Ohtani on Thursday delivered his first two-homer game of the season and had six RBIs as the Los Angeles Dodgers poured it on with five long balls in a 19-2 victory over the visiting Athletics. Max Muncy, Andy Pages and James Outman also hit home runs for the Dodgers, who left no doubt by taking a 13-2 lead following a seven-run third inning. Muncy and Kim Hye-seong each had three hits for Los Angeles. Dodgers right-hander Matt Sauer led off a bullpen game by allowing two runs in four innings. Left-hander Justin Wrobleski (1-1) finished with four scoreless innings after he
