Alex Ovechkin on Sunday night scored his 500th and 501st goals to become the 43rd NHL player to reach the milestone as the Washington Capitals beat the Ottawa Senators 7-1.
Ovechkin reached the mark in vintage fashion, scoring from just beyond the left hash marks during a second-period power play to give the Washington Capitals a 5-1 lead.
Teammates mobbed Ovechkin, and he got an extended standing ovation and took a skate around the rink, acknowledging the cheering crowd that included his parents.

He later drew another roar while waving to fans from the bench.
Washington have won four straight overall and 10 consecutive home games.
Justin Williams, T.J. Oshie, Zach Sill, Dmitry Orlov and Tom Wilson also scored for Washington. Jason Chimera and Nicklas Backstrom each had three assists, and Philipp Grubauer made 32 saves.
Mike Hoffman had Ottawa’s lone goal, and Andrew Hammond stopped 29 of 36 shots.
DEVILS 2, WILD 1
In St Paul, Minnesota, Jon Merrill put New Jersey ahead in the third period with his first goal of the season and Cory Schneider made 17 saves as the Devils beat Minnesota to snap a season-high three-game losing streak.
Adam Henrique scored for New Jersey 1 minute, 21 seconds into the third period, but Minnesota’s Zach Parise got his 16th goal less than 2 minutes later. That score was Parise’s first against his former team.
Merrill broke the tie 6 minutes, 26 seconds into the third, while Schneider made 10 saves.
Darcy Kuemper made 15 saves in his return from a concussion for the Wild, suffering his first regulation loss of the season in 10 games.
Beginning a season-long four-game trip and missing several key players, the Devils got just enough offense against similarly stingy Minnesota.
Both teams entered play among the top five in the NHL in fewest goals allowed per game.
BLACKHAWKS 6, AVALANCHE 3
In Chicago, Patrick Kane and Marian Hossa each scored two goals as Chicago pounded Colorado to extend their season-high win streak to seven.
Jonathan Toews had a goal and two assists to help Chicago chase Semyon Varlamov and improved to 18-5-1 at home. Brandon Mashinter scored his second career goal and Corey Crawford had 34 saves.
The Blackhawks (58 points) moved within four points of idle Dallas for the top spot in the Western Conference.
Matt Duchene had two goals and an assist for Colorado, who had won three in a row and four of six. Nathan MacKinnon also scored and Calvin Pickard finished with 13 stops in relief of Varlamov, who had 16 saves.
SABRES 4, JETS 2
In Winnipeg, Manitoba, Sam Reinhart scored three goals for his first NHL hat-trick as Buffalo beat Winnipeg to snap a six-game losing streak.
Former Jets forward Evander Kane had an assist on Reinhart’s empty-net goal in his first game against the team that traded him on Feb. 11 last year in a multiplayer deal.
Marcus Foligno also scored for Buffalo, and Linus Ullmark made 42 saves.
Blake Wheeler and Mathieu Perreault scored for the Jets, and Connor Hellebuyck turned aside 25 shots.
In other results, it was:

He continues to find new ways to amaze, this year becoming the first player to hit 50 home runs and steal 50 bases
More than 180 years of horse racing came to an end in Singapore on Saturday, as the Singapore Turf Club hosted its final race day before its track is handed back to the Singaporean government to provide land for new homes. Under an overcast sky, the air-conditioned VIP boxes were full of enthusiasts, socialites and expats, while the grounds and betting halls below hosted mostly older-generation punters. The sun broke through for the last race, the last-ever Grand Singapore Gold Cup. The winner, South African jockey Muzi Yeni, echoed a feeling of loss shared by many on the day. “I’d
PREDICTION: Last week, when Yu’s father made a wrong turn to the former champions’ parking lot, he said that his son could park there after this year With back-to-back birdies on the 18th hole, Kevin Yu fulfilled his driving range-owning dad’s prediction that he would win the Sanderson Farms Championship and become Taiwan’s third golfer to claim a US PGA Tour title. The Taoyuan-born 26-year-old, who represented Taiwan in the Olympic golf at Paris, saw off Californian Beau Hossler in a playoff at the Country Club of Jackson, Mississippi, on Sunday. Having drained a 15-foot putt to claw his way into the playoff, Yu rolled in from five feet on the first extra hole, ensuring he joined Chen Tze-chung (LA Open in 1987) and Pan Cheng-tsung (RBC
Francesco Bagnaia yesterday profited from a mistake by rookie Pedro Acosta to win the Japan MotoGP sprint and close the gap on overall championship leader, Jorge Martin. Spaniard Acosta crashed with four laps to go while leading the field at Motegi, allowing defending world champion Bagnaia to take first ahead of Enea Bastianini and Marc Marquez. Spain’s Martin finished fourth and saw his overall lead over Italian Bagnaia in the championship standings cut to 15 points. “I am very happy because with these conditions, it’s not very easy to win and gain points,” Bagnaia said after a sprint race that took place under
