SSC Napoli thrashed Frosinone 5-1 away to go top of Serie A on Sunday after previous leaders Inter were sunk by a Domenico Berardi penalty in the fifth minute of stoppage-time in a 1-0 home defeat against modest US Sassuolo.
Gonzalo Higuain scored twice, taking his tally to 18, for Napoli as the lead changed hands for the 10th time in 19 rounds of games this season.
Napoli, with 41 points, are two clear of Inter and lead at the halfway mark, making them the so-called “winter champions” for the first time since the 1989-1990 season, the last time they won the title.

Titleholders Juventus pulled level on 39 points with Inter after Paul Pogba and Sami Khedira scored to give them a 2-1 win at UC Sampodoria, their ninth league victory on the trot.
Antonio Cassano replied for Samp, who had Niklas Moisander sent off for a wild challenge in stoppage-time.
Inter dominated their match at soggy San Siro, but were repeatedly foiled by Sassuolo goalkeeper Andrea Consigli.
Berardi sent Inter goalkeeper Samir Handanovic the wrong way to complete an extraordinary win for Sassuolo, who were beaten 7-0 in the same fixture last season, as Inter coach Roberto Mancini watched on in disbelief.
The penalty was awarded after Inter defender Jeisson Murillo mistimed a header, then teammate Miranda clumsily bundled over Gregoire Defrel as the hosts made a pig’s ear of dealing with an innocuous Sassuolo attack.
“That’s football,” Mancini said. “We created lots of chances, but Consigli was fantastic and we just couldn’t get the goal.”
Inter missed a flurry of early chances and when Adem Ljajic finally managed to get a curling effort on target just before halftime his effort was brilliantly tipped away by Consigli.
Consigli again denied the Serbian after the break, then did well to parry away a low drive from Geoffrey Kondogbia as he kept sixth-placed Sassuolo in the game.
In an end-to-end game, Inter forward Rodrigo Palacio had a shot cleared off the line, while, at the other end, Handanovic made a superb reflex save at close range to stop an acrobatic volley from Antonio Floro Flores.
Consigli again denied Ljajic and turned away a curling effort from substitute Stevan Jovetic, before Berardi struck for Sassuolo.
Raul Albiol turned the ball in at the far post before Higuain won and converted a penalty to put Napoli 2-0 ahead at Frosinone after half an hour.
Marek Hamsik and Higuain scored twice in a minute after the break, the Argentine’s fourth brace in the past six games, and Manolo Gabbiandini added the fifth.
Unheralded Empoli went seventh, above AC Milan, after winning 1-0 at Torino with a second-half goal by Massimo Maccarone.
There were also 1-0 away wins for AC Chievo Verona, at Roberto Donadoni’s Bologna, and US Citta di Palermo at bottom club Hellas Verona, who remained winless. Genoa’s 2-0 win at Atalanta BC took them four points clear of the relegation zone.

Zhang Shuai yesterday said that she nearly quit after losing 24 matches in a row — now the world No. 595 is into the quarter-finals of her home China Open. The 35-year-old is to face Spain’s Paula Badosa as the lowest-ranked player to reach this stage in the history of the tournament after Badosa reeled off 11 of the last 12 games in a 6-4, 6-0 victory over US Open finalist Jessica Pegula. Zhang went into Beijing on a barren run lasting more than 600 days and her string of singles defeats was the second-longest on the WTA Tour Open era, which

Wu took just more than two hours to top world No. 172 McDonald 6-3, 7-6 (7/4) to win his second challenger tournament since the Tallahassee Tennis Challenger in 2022. Wu’s Tallahassee win followed two years of
UP IN SMOKE: More than half a dozen riders crashed out of the race, with Marquez’s title chances in doubt after driving off the track with flames flickering from his bike Jorge Martin yesterday won a crash-filled Indonesia MotoGP to extend his championship lead, while closest rival Francesco Bagnaia limited the damage by claiming the final podium place. The win leaves the Pramac Racing rider 21 points ahead of his Italian Ducati rival, who finished third behind Spaniard Pedro Acosta in sweltering conditions at the Mandalika International Street Circuit on Lombok island. In front of a crowd of 60,000 in motorbike-mad Indonesia, the 26-year-old put his tumble in Saturday’s sprint behind him, canceling out the gains his title rival Bagnaia made after securing victory in that race. “Thank you Indonesia. I am very happy.
