Real Madrid got their La Liga title challenge back on course, despite an underwhelming performance, as goals from Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo handed them a 2-0 win at Sociedad Deportiva Eibar on Sunday.
In front of a capacity 6,000 crowd at Esatdio Municipal de Ipurua, Real did little to dispel the doubts caused by their 4-0 thrashing by Barcelona last weekend, but Bale’s first-half header and a late penalty from Ronaldo were enough for all three points.
Real remain in third, but victory takes Rafael Benitez’s men back to within six points of league leaders Barca and two points of city rivals Atletico Madrid.

“The important thing was to get the three points and do so with this spirit of sacrifice,” Benitez said. “The fans know that the most important thing when you have players of this quality is that they also work as they did today. That is the key if we want to continue being strong in the future.”
Eibar have enjoyed a stellar start to just their second season in the top flight, but as against Barcelona and Atletico in their only other two prior defeats this season, they did not have enough quality to trouble Real in the final third.
After a slow start, Ronaldo was presented with a great chance to open the scoring on 15 minutes from James Rodriguez’s fine pass, but he could not lift the ball over the advancing Asier Riesgo and Mateo Kovacic wastefully fired the rebound over.

Real’s pressure told two minutes before the break when Luka Modric’s cross was flicked home at the near post by Bale for his first goal for Real in three months.
The Welshman could have had a second moments later as he controlled a long ball into the box, but lacked the power needed in his final effort to beat Riesgo.
Bale turned provider at the start of the second period with a pinpoint cross for Ronaldo, only for the Portuguese to fluff his lines when attempting an overhead-kick.
Ronaldo’s wayward afternoon in front of goal continued when he somehow failed to hit the target with the goal at his mercy after rounding Riesgo from Lucas Vazquez’s pass.
Yet, he was gifted the chance to register his 16th goal of the season when referee Gil Manzano pointed to the spot after Vazquez went down under minimal contact from Dani Garcia eight minutes from time.
Elsewhere, Valencia coach Nuno Espirito Santo confirmed a 1-0 defeat at Sevilla would be his last in charge of the club.
Sevilla dominated from the off and were handed a huge boost when Joao Cancelo was sent off for a second bookable offense 10 minutes before half-time.
Sergio Escudero finally opened the scoring when he connected with Ever Banega’s cross five minutes into the second-half.
Valencia ended with nine men as Javi Fuego also picked up a second yellow card to leave the visitors still five points off the top four, with the prospect of facing Barcelona at home on Saturday.
Villarreal missed the chance to move back into the top four as their awful form continued with a 2-0 defeat at Getafe.
Angel Lafita and Alvaro Vazquez struck for the hosts, which meant Villarreal remained in sixth, having won just one of their last seven league games.
Also on Sunday, Aritz Aduriz became the first Spanish striker to score 20 goals in a season before December this century as he netted a hat-trick in Athletic Bilbao’s 3-0 romp at Rayo Vallecano de Madrid.
SSC Napoli’s Italian Serie A title hopes suffered a late setback on Sunday when they were held to a 2-2 draw at home against Genoa, setting up a thrilling season finale with closest rivals Inter just one point behind. The hosts remain top with 78 points, holding a slim lead over Inter, who won 2-0 at Torino earlier on Sunday, with two rounds remaining. To make matters worse for Napoli, midfielder Stanislav Lobotka, struggling with an ankle injury, was forced off just minutes after the match began. Scott McTominay delivered a perfect pass into the box where Romelu Lukaku got
A stunning Lamine Yamal strike on Thursday helped crown Barcelona La Liga champions with a 2-0 win over local rivals RCD Espanyol, with victory ensuring Real Madrid cannot catch them at the top of the table. Yamal’s effort and Fermin Lopez’s goal took Hansi Flick’s side seven points clear of Los Blancos with two matches remaining, to clinch Barcelona’s 28th title and complete a superb domestic treble. Only the UEFA Champions League title escaped an exciting young Barca side this season, as they won the league for the second time in six years, at Espanyol’s ground again just as in 2022-2023. Back then,
Jannik Sinner on Thursday marched into the semi-finals of the Italian Open after destroying Casper Ruud in straight sets 6-0, 6-1, while Coco Gauff won a marathon three-set battle with China’s Zheng Qinwen to advance to the women’s singles final. American Gauff is to face Italy’s Jasmine Paolini in today’s title match after pulling through 7-6 (7/3), 4-6, 7-6 (7/4) in a match that lasted over three-and-a-half hours. Ruud was supposed to be Sinner’s toughest test in Rome since he came back from his three-month doping ban, as the Norwegian came into the match in hot form on clay after winning in
Shohei Ohtani on Thursday delivered his first two-homer game of the season and had six RBIs as the Los Angeles Dodgers poured it on with five long balls in a 19-2 victory over the visiting Athletics. Max Muncy, Andy Pages and James Outman also hit home runs for the Dodgers, who left no doubt by taking a 13-2 lead following a seven-run third inning. Muncy and Kim Hye-seong each had three hits for Los Angeles. Dodgers right-hander Matt Sauer led off a bullpen game by allowing two runs in four innings. Left-hander Justin Wrobleski (1-1) finished with four scoreless innings after he
