Ravichandran Ashwin led South Africa’s rout on a spinners’ paradise as India romped to a 124-run victory with more than two days to spare in the third Test to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the four-match series yesterday.
The off-spinner claimed seven second-innings wickets, while leg-spinner Amit Mishra grabbed the remaining three as South Africa, chasing 310 to stay alive in the contest, folded for 185.
The setback also meant South Africa, currently the top-ranked team in the format, succumbed to their first away Test series defeat since 2006.

“It’s very pleasing indeed, especially after South Africa own the T20 and the one-day series here,” Virat Kohli said after sealing his first home Test series victory as India captain. “They are a tough side to beat. Sealing the series in Nagpur feels very good.”
Ashwin, who had claimed five wickets in the first innings, made the most of the turning track at the VCA Stadium, dismissing Dean Elgar (18) and A.B. de Villiers (9) in the morning to peg back South Africa.
South Africa skipper Hashim Amla dug in to negate the spin, playing with soft hands so edges did not carry to slip, while Faf du Plessis used his feet well against the India spinners.
In a Test match that saw 32 wickets tumble on the first two days, the pair showed grit and determination to thwart the India bowlers for more than 46 overs with the biggest partnership in the low-scoring contest.
The duo survived numerous leg before and bat-pad catch appeals, before Mishra ended the 72-run stand that unhinged the visitors.
Amla offered an edge off the top half of his bat to perish in the gully and in Mishra’s next over, Du Plessis lost his stump to a ball that kept low. Both batsmen contributed 39 runs.
“Mishra showed great character in that tough phase, to get Hashim out first and then Du Plessis in back-to-back overs. That was the turning point for us,” Kohli said.
Ashwin returned to mow down the Proteas tail and finish with a match haul of 12 wickets that earned him the man-of-the-match award.
“To be quite honest we could have got bowled out for 100 [in the second innings], there were [a] lot of plays-and-misses and chances that could have gone to hand,” Amla said.
“We tried to dig deep as long as we can. For me, the biggest thing was whether you win or lose, do it as honorably as possible,” the Proteas skipper said.
A stunning Lamine Yamal strike on Thursday helped crown Barcelona La Liga champions with a 2-0 win over local rivals RCD Espanyol, with victory ensuring Real Madrid cannot catch them at the top of the table. Yamal’s effort and Fermin Lopez’s goal took Hansi Flick’s side seven points clear of Los Blancos with two matches remaining, to clinch Barcelona’s 28th title and complete a superb domestic treble. Only the UEFA Champions League title escaped an exciting young Barca side this season, as they won the league for the second time in six years, at Espanyol’s ground again just as in 2022-2023. Back then,
Jannik Sinner on Thursday marched into the semi-finals of the Italian Open after destroying Casper Ruud in straight sets 6-0, 6-1, while Coco Gauff won a marathon three-set battle with China’s Zheng Qinwen to advance to the women’s singles final. American Gauff is to face Italy’s Jasmine Paolini in today’s title match after pulling through 7-6 (7/3), 4-6, 7-6 (7/4) in a match that lasted over three-and-a-half hours. Ruud was supposed to be Sinner’s toughest test in Rome since he came back from his three-month doping ban, as the Norwegian came into the match in hot form on clay after winning in
Shohei Ohtani on Thursday delivered his first two-homer game of the season and had six RBIs as the Los Angeles Dodgers poured it on with five long balls in a 19-2 victory over the visiting Athletics. Muncy and Kim Hye-seong each had three hits for Los Angeles. Dodgers right-hander Matt Sauer led off a bullpen game by allowing two runs in four innings. Left-hander Justin Wrobleski (1-1) finished with four scoreless innings after he
SSC Napoli will have to wait one more week to seal the Serie A title after on Sunday being held to a goalless draw at Parma, while closest rivals Inter drew 2-2 in a dramatic game with SS Lazio. Antonio Conte’s team stayed one point ahead of Inter and were unfortunate not to win after twice striking the woodwork through Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa and Matteo Politano, while Scott McTominay also had a free-kick tipped onto the crossbar. The away side thought they would be handed a chance to take the points from the penalty spot in the 96th minute when David Neres
