AS Roma are seeking to consolidate their summit spot at Inter today, while sleeping Serie A giants Juventus need a much needed pick-me-up in their derby clash with Torino.
Roma arrive at the San Siro on a six-match winning streak after Wednesday’s Maicon-inspired 3-1 success over Udinese.
That lifted them back into the Serie A lead, two points clear of SSC Napoli, ACF Fiorentina and Inter, who saw off Bologna 24 hours earlier.

Roma’s Greece international Kostas Manolas, who set up Gervinho for the third goal against Udinese, said the mood is buoyant at the Stadio Olimpico in the capital.
“We have a great side here... we’re getting more and more confident. We have to carry on like this, but we need to work even more. Next up is Inter and we want to win that game,” Manolas said.
Brazilian star Maicon, who scored one and set up another on Wednesday, says despite Roma’s surge to the summit it is too soon to start contemplating a first scudetto since 2000-2001.
“It’s too early. I’ve won many titles and I know it doesn’t work like that,” Maicon said. “We’ve got a long way to go, but we’re on the right track and we have to keep on moving in this direction.”
Roberto Mancini’s Inter snapped a four-game winless run in midweek to put them in an improved frame of mind for their top-of-the-table clash.
Whatever the outcome, Inter’s Slovenian goalkeeper Samir Handanovic can expect to put in a busier shift today than the one against Bologna.
“The team is flying right now. We’ve got another match coming up on Saturday and we need to recover before then, plain and simple. Roma will be a big test in our home stadium,” Handanovic said.
While Roma and Inter’s stars are in the ascendancy, Juve’s appears on the wane — Wednesday’s 1-0 loss at UC Sampdoria leaving the defending champions in a lowly 12th position, 11 points adrift of Roma.
Coach Massimiliano Allegri did not mince his words about what he wanted from himself and his under-achieving titleholders.
Speaking after the Sampdoria loss, he said: “There was no need for us to be tense and commit fouls near our area.”
“There’s absolutely no excuse for it, we must grow quickly and take responsibility. We are Juventus and our approach needs to be different,” Allegri said. “We need to get through this by working and preparing for Saturday’s derby, then we’ve got the Champions League. Everyone needs to take the blame for tonight and I’m the first to hold my hands up. We must do better.”
Tomorrow’s action sees Napoli, in second place on goal-difference, at Genoa and third-placed Fiorentina hosting strugglers Frosinone.
Maurizio Sarri’s highflying Napoli extended their winning run in all competitions to seven with a 2-0 defeat of US Citta di Palermo in midweek.
“I’m satisfied with our performances, but we can’t become big-headed,” Sarri said.
“We need to remain balanced, only two points cover five teams and we’re not even at the halfway point of the season,” he added.
One team brushed aside by Napoli this month, AC Milan, travel to SS Lazio seemingly in good heart after back-to-back wins, but they will need to be with their hosts having won all eight of their home games this campaign.
Manchester United on Tuesday confirmed Michael Carrick as interim manager until the end of the season, tasking him with leading the Red Devils back into the UEFA Champions League. “Having the responsibility to lead Manchester United is an honor,” said Carrick, 44, who won 12 major trophies in his 12-year playing career at United. The former midfielder previously had an unbeaten three-game stint as caretaker boss at Old Trafford in 2021. Carrick then took on his first permanent managerial role at second-tier Middlesbrough in October 2022 and was sacked in June last year after the club finished 10th in the
Dallas Mavericks rookie Cooper Flagg on Wednesday was ruled out for the second half of their 118-109 loss to the Denver Nuggets after the No. 1 pick sprained his left ankle in the first half. Flagg was called for a foul while defending against Peyton Watson and turned the ankle as he fell to the floor with 6 minutes, 1 second left in the second quarter. Flagg limped to the bench and continued to the locker room, but returned for the final 2 minutes, 35 seconds before the break. The 19-year-old did not come out for the second half before the announcement that
Yassine Bounou on Wednesday saved two penalties, while Youssef en-Nesyri netted the decisive spot-kick as hosts Morocco secured a 4-2 shoot-out victory over Nigeria following a 0-0 draw in a tense Africa Cup of Nations semi-final in Rabat. Morocco, seeking their first continental title in 50 years, are to face 2021 winners Senegal in Sunday’s decider in Rabat, while Nigeria take on Egypt in the third-place playoff tomorrow. The 120 minutes before the shoot-out had few clear-cut chances for either side, but it was Morocco who created more opportunities, although they were denied by some fine saves from Nigeria goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali. Reigning NBA Most Valuable Player Shai Gilgeous-Alexander on Sunday sparked defending champions Oklahoma City to victory, while Anthony Edwards led Minnesota’s last-minute fightback to beat San Antonio. Gilgeous-Alexander scored 29 points while adding eight assists and five rebounds in the Thunder’s 124-112 home victory over Miami, improving the NBA’s best record to 33-7 after outscoring the Heat 70-53 in the second half. “We locked in defensively. We were finally able to get some stops,” Thunder guard Aaron Wiggins said. “We were able to get out in transition a little bit, get going offensively and find the flow.” Jalen Williams scored 18 points, while
