Top FIFA sponsors on Friday joined forces to demand Sepp Blatter’s immediate resignation, dealing a fresh blow to the scandal-tainted world soccer chief even as he vowed to cling to power.
In separate statements issued one week after criminal proceedings were launched against Blatter in Switzerland, Coca-Cola, McDonald’s, Visa and Budweiser all called on the 79-year-old to step down.
It marked the first time that FIFA’s powerful financial backers — who together have pumped hundreds of millions of dollars into the organization through deals spanning decades — had called explicitly for Blatter to resign.
In a statement issued by his US lawyer in reaction to the sponsor demands, Blatter defiantly vowed to remain in office.
However, the US-based sponsors said Blatter’s position was now untenable in the wake of the corruption scandal that has plunged world soccer into its worst-ever crisis.
“For the benefit of the game, the Coca-Cola Company is calling for FIFA president Joseph Blatter to step down immediately so that a credible and sustainable reform process can begin in earnest,” the soft drinks giant said.
“Every day that passes, the image and reputation of FIFA continues to tarnish. FIFA needs comprehensive and urgent reform, and that can only be accomplished through a truly independent approach,” it added.
McDonald’s said that the recent wave of headlines meant that Blatter, who had vowed to remain in the post until the election of his successor early next year, could not continue.
“The events of recent weeks have continued to diminish the reputation of FIFA and public confidence in its leadership,” the US fast food leader said.
“We believe it would be in the best interest of the game for FIFA president Sepp Blatter to step down immediately so that the reform process can proceed with the credibility that is needed,” it added.
Meanwhile, Visa cast doubt on Blatter’s ability to clean up the swamp of sleaze in which FIFA is mired.
“We believe no meaningful reform can be made under FIFA’s existing leadership, and given the events of last week, it’s clear it would be in the best interests of FIFA and the sport for Sepp Blatter to step down immediately,” Visa said.
Anheuser-Busch InBev, whose Budweiser beer has been a FIFA sponsor since the 1980s, also joined the calls, saying Blatter’s continued presence was “an obstacle in the reform process.”
The sponsor comments were in stark contrast to previous, carefully worded statements on the corruption scandal, none of which mentioned Blatter by name.
It was not clear whether FIFA top sponsors based outside the US, including Hyundai, Adidas and Gazprom would follow suit.
Blatter’s New York attorney Richard Cullen swiftly issued a statement saying the FIFA chief had no plans to relinquish his position.
Blatter “believes firmly that his leaving office now would not be in the best interest of FIFA, nor would it advance the process of reform and therefore, he will not resign,” it said.
A FIFA spokeswoman declined to comment on the sponsor’s demands, which create a fresh headache for Blatter as he attempts to remain in office.
Football Association chairman Greg Dyke, a long-time critic of Blatter, said the sponsor calls marked the end of the road for the FIFA chief.
“I think this is a game-changer. It doesn’t matter what Mr Blatter says now — if the people who pay for FIFA want a change they will get a change,” Dyke said in London. “For those of us who want fundamental change, this is good news.”
Swiss prosecutors say Blatter is the target of a probe into “criminal mismanagement” at FIFA, focusing on a 2005 TV rights sale to the Caribbean Football Union and a payment of 2 million Swiss francs (US$2.06 million) made in 2011 to European soccer chief Michel Platini, the front-runner to succeed Blatter.
Both Blatter and Platini have strongly denied any wrongdoing.
News that criminal proceedings had been opened against Blatter last week sent fresh shocks through the soccer world, deepening the crisis that erupted in May, when the US Department of Justice indicted 14 people over bribery in soccer deals worth more than US$150 million dating back to 1991.
Aside from an open criminal file against its president, nine FIFA officials have been charged in the US. Blatter’s former right-hand man, secretary-general Jerome Valcke, was suspended last month over allegations that he was aware of a black market ticket scheme surrounding last year’s World Cup.
Valcke denied the claims.
American rugby sevens star Ilona Maher is to join 15-a-side club Bristol next month in a bid to play in next year’s Women’s Rugby World Cup, the English club announced on Monday. Maher, 28, helped the US to a bronze medal at this summer’s Olympic Games in Paris and is the seven-a-side sport’s most popular player on social media. “This is a huge coup to be able to bring Ilona Maher to Bristol Bears on a short-term deal,” Bristol head coach Dave Ward said. “She is one of the biggest names in women’s sport, let alone rugby, and we believe she will
New Taipei Kings guard Jeremy Lin on Friday was named the Taiwan Professional Basketball League’s (TPBL) Player of the Month, the first domestic player to win the award, while the Hsinchu Toplus Lioneers are to welcome their third head coach in less than a year. The Kings last night defeated the Lioneers 96-78 to move level with the top-of-the-table Formosa Dreamers (5-2), while in the night game, the New Taipei
LeBron James is in quite the shooting slump — especially from long distance, highlighted by his zero-for-four effort from three-point range for the Los Angeles Lakers in their 109-80 loss against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Monday. That return stretched the nearly-40-year-old’s skid to zero-for-19 from deep over his past four games. James’ birthday is on Dec. 30. After going four-for-16 from the floor overall with six of his team’s 20 turnovers for a season-low 10 points against the Timberwolves, James was asked to reflect on the Lakers reaching the quarter mark of their 2024-2025 schedule under rookie coach J.J. Redick at 12-9. “I
TO NO AVAIL: The Denver Nuggets’ Serbian center Nikola Jokic surpassed his 53-point performance in the 2023 Western Conference semi-finals against Phoenix The Washington Wizards withstood a 56-point explosion from Denver star Nikola Jokic to beat the Nuggets 122-113 on Saturday and snap their 16-game NBA losing streak. Jokic, who won his third NBA Most Valuable Player (MVP) award last season, posted a career scoring high — surpassing a 53-point performance in game four of the 2023 Western Conference semi-finals against Phoenix and a 50-point regular-season best against Sacramento in 2021. The Serbian big man added 16 rebounds and eight assists, but it was all to no avail as Washington, buoyed by 39 points from Jordan Poole, won for the first time
