South Africa Rugby Union president Oregan Hoskins has defended his administration’s record in providing opportunities to non-white players at the highest level and urged the country to get behind the team for the World Cup.
Critics of the union have pointed to the minority of nine non-white players on coach Heyneke Meyer’s 31-man World Cup squad as evidence that the union has dragged its heels on racial transformation in the sport.
Hoskins hit back in an open letter, accusing critics of having an agenda.

“Not one of those players selected himself and yet there are those who wish them ill, and even to fail, as some form of protest against rugby and what they perceive to be our transformation record,” Hoskins said.
“Many opinions have been aired over recent weeks and I have listened to them with growing frustration,” he said.
“I have been frustrated because the good story we have been telling has been falling on deaf ears; and we do have a good news story to tell,” he said.
“Let us get one thing absolutely clear: Our sport is massively transformed from where it was in 1992,” he added. “The idea of an ‘exclusive,’ ‘white-dominated’ game is frankly laughable.”
South Africa has made strides since Chester Williams broke the race ceiling as the only non-white player in the 1995 World Cup-winning team.
However, the union’s goal of having non-white players make up half the national squad by 2019 seems remote.
Promising young black players often face tough hurdles, with most township schools lacking finances, facilities and specialized coaching to nurture talent.
Many schools in overwhelmingly black provinces do not offer the sport, which is more widely played in the Western Cape and Eastern Cape provinces, home to large Afrikaans-speaking white and mixed-race communities.
Hoskins admitted that there are disparities in participation rates, but said he was confident the union could achieve its targets.
“Our game thirsts for outstanding players and whether one emerges in a township school or from a traditional rugby school, you can be sure the system will find him and nurture him,” he said.
“The transformation train has left the station and it is the critics that have been left on the platform,” he said.
“Rugby is definitely on track,” Hoskins added.
The World Cup squad is to fly to England today and Hoskins urged fans to show their support ahead of their opening match against Japan in Brighton on Sept. 19.
“I would urge all supporters to demonstrate their true feelings towards the team, in the way that the team shows its loyalty to our country — by wearing their Springbok jerseys to the shop, the office, the factory, the mine or on the farm on Friday,” he said.
SSC Napoli will have to wait one more week to seal the Serie A title after on Sunday being held to a goalless draw at Parma, while closest rivals Inter drew 2-2 in a dramatic game with SS Lazio. Antonio Conte’s team stayed one point ahead of Inter and were unfortunate not to win after twice striking the woodwork through Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa and Matteo Politano, while Scott McTominay also had a free-kick tipped onto the crossbar. The away side thought they would be handed a chance to take the points from the penalty spot in the 96th minute when David Neres
A stunning Lamine Yamal strike on Thursday helped crown Barcelona La Liga champions with a 2-0 win over local rivals RCD Espanyol, with victory ensuring Real Madrid cannot catch them at the top of the table. Yamal’s effort and Fermin Lopez’s goal took Hansi Flick’s side seven points clear of Los Blancos with two matches remaining, to clinch Barcelona’s 28th title and complete a superb domestic treble. Only the UEFA Champions League title escaped an exciting young Barca side this season, as they won the league for the second time in six years, at Espanyol’s ground again just as in 2022-2023. Back then,

American Gauff is to face Italy’s Jasmine Paolini in today’s title match after pulling through 7-6 (7/3), 4-6, 7-6 (7/4) in a match that lasted over three-and-a-half hours. Ruud was supposed to be Sinner’s toughest test in Rome since he came back from his three-month doping ban, as the Norwegian came into the match in hot form on clay after winning in
Omar Marmoush’s stunning long-range strike on Tuesday upstaged Kevin de Bruyne on the Manchester City great’s Etihad farewell. Marmoush let fly from about 30m to put City ahead in their 3-1 win against AFC Bournemouth in the Premier League. The victory moved Pep Guardiola’s team up to third in the standings and left qualification for the UEFA Champions League in their own hands heading into the last round of the season. “It’s really important. To be in the Champions League after what happened [this season] will be really nice,” the City manager said. De Bruyne was making his final home appearance for City before
