The NFL season, which was to start yesterday, will unleash a flood of wagering in which US$95 billion will be bet, most of it illegally, the American Gaming Association (AGA) said on Wednesday.
“Illegal sports betting is reaching new heights of popularity in America,” AGA president and chief executive Geoff Freeman said in a press release. “It’s clear that a federal ban on traditional sports betting outside of Nevada is failing.”
The Washington-based trade group reckons that nearly US$93 billon in illegal bets will be taken on NFL and college gridiron games this season, with slightly less than US$2 billion wagered at legal sports books in Nevada.
According to the AGA, Americans made US$3.8 billion worth of illicit bets on the Super Bowl alone last season.
“It’s clear that it’s a very popular activity that’s only growing in popularity,” the AGA’s Chris Moyer said. “It’s become an American pastime in many regards.”
Nevada, best known for the glittering gambling haven of Las Vegas, is currently the only state legally offering a full menu of sports betting, with some limited legalized sports wagering also offered in a handful of other states.
Not surprisingly, other states want to get in on the potentially lucrative action, with New Jersey in the midst of a four-year, multimillion-dollar court battle to allow such betting after residents voted for it in 2011.
New Jersey Governor Chris Christie’s administration this week filed a motion for the full US Third Circuit Court of Appeals to hear the case, two weeks after a three-judge third circuit court panel ruled against the state.
The NFL, NBA, NHL and MLB have all opposed New Jersey’s efforts, telling the court the proposed legislation threatens the integrity of their games and violates a 1992 federal ban on sports betting in most states.
However, NBA commissioner Adam Silver has said that the growth of legalized sports betting in the US is “inevitable” and has called on the US Congress to create a federal law that would allow states to offer sports betting.
The NBA wants to see a “federal legislative solution that would protect the integrity of the game while allowing those who engage in sports betting to do so in a legal manner,” NBA spokesman Mike Bass said in a statement after New Jersey’s latest court setback.
Moyer said the AGA, through its Illegal Gambling Advisory Board, formed in June, is studying how legal sports betting might best be introduced in the US and whether federal laws or state statutes would best govern it.
Officially, the NFL, baseball and the powerful NCAA that governs big-money collegiate sports remain opposed to wider legalization of sports betting.
However, baseball’s commissioner is open to discussing changing that position, and all the major US sports leagues now have sponsorship deals with “daily fantasy sports” companies that allow fans to wager money on made-up teams they create with players from different real-life teams.
SSC Napoli’s Italian Serie A title hopes suffered a late setback on Sunday when they were held to a 2-2 draw at home against Genoa, setting up a thrilling season finale with closest rivals Inter just one point behind. The hosts remain top with 78 points, holding a slim lead over Inter, who won 2-0 at Torino earlier on Sunday, with two rounds remaining. To make matters worse for Napoli, midfielder Stanislav Lobotka, struggling with an ankle injury, was forced off just minutes after the match began. Scott McTominay delivered a perfect pass into the box where Romelu Lukaku got
Harry Kane opened the scoring ahead of lifting his first career silverware as Bayern Munich beat Borussia Moenchengladbach 2-0, with veteran Thomas Mueller playing his last home game for the club. Bayern officially won the title on May 4 when defending champions Bayer Leverkusen were held to a 2-2 draw at Freiburg, but were presented with the Bundesliga shield in front of their home fans at full-time. Dripping wet after being showered with beer by teammates, Kane said the title win was “an incredible feeling,” and hoped it would be “the first of many.” “It’s been lot of hard work, a lot of

Yamal’s effort and Fermin Lopez’s goal took Hansi Flick’s side seven points clear of Los Blancos with two matches remaining, to clinch Barcelona’s 28th title and complete a superb domestic treble. Only the UEFA Champions League title escaped an exciting young Barca side this season, as they won the league for the second time in six years, at Espanyol’s ground again just as in 2022-2023. Jannik Sinner on Thursday marched into the semi-finals of the Italian Open after destroying Casper Ruud in straight sets 6-0, 6-1, while Coco Gauff won a marathon three-set battle with China’s Zheng Qinwen to advance to the women’s singles final. American Gauff is to face Italy’s Jasmine Paolini in today’s title match after pulling through 7-6 (7/3), 4-6, 7-6 (7/4) in a match that lasted over three-and-a-half hours. Ruud was supposed to be Sinner’s toughest test in Rome since he came back from his three-month doping ban, as the Norwegian came into the match in hot form on clay after winning in
