Should Floyd Mayweather Jr end his boxing career tomorrow night as promised with his welterweight title defense against fellow American Andre Berto, he could well sign off with a whimper rather than a bang.
In stark contrast to his previous fight, the much-hyped megabout with Manny Pacquiao four months ago, the buildup to Mayweather’s 49th appearance in the ring as a professional has lacked buzz and plenty of tickets are still available.
In May, Mayweather earned more than US$200 million from his so-called “Fight of the Century” with Pacquiao that became boxing’s richest ever showdown. Against Berto, Mayweather has settled for a reported US$32 million.

The appeal of the bout at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, which will be televised on pay-per-view for a suggested price of US$74.95, has clearly not been helped by Mayweather’s choice of opponent, Berto having lost three of his past six fights.
“I just try to stay positive, keep my fingers crossed and hope for the best,” undefeated five-division world champion Mayweather said of the slow ticket sales while preparing for what he has repeatedly said will be his swansong in the ring. “Nobody’s forced to watch. Watch if you want to watch. If you don’t want to watch, don’t watch.”
Asked how many pay-per-view (PPV) buys would make the fight a success in his eyes, Mayweather replied: “The numbers will be what they are. Only thing I can do. I can’t say any particular number, but we’ll just have to see.”
Should the numbers end up being anywhere near mediocre, it would be out of character with what Mayweather, the world’s highest-paid athlete, has so far achieved during his remarkable career in the ring.
His past five bouts in a lucrative six-fight deal with cable giant Showtime Sports that concludes tomorrow have produced staggering figures.
“The first five fights yielded nearly 10 million PPV buys, US$750 million in PPV receipts,” Showtime Sports executive vice president and general manager Stephen Espinoza told a news conference at the MGM Grand on Wednesday.
Mayweather (48-0 with 26 knockouts) bristles whenever criticism is raised over his choice of Berto as his opponent for his “final” fight.
“I chose Berto because he’s very exciting,” Mayweather said of the twice former welterweight world champion, who has a record of 30-3 including 23 knockouts. “Andre Berto is going to push Floyd Mayweather to the limit. That’s one thing I do know. Berto always gives an exciting fight. If he gets knocked down, he gets back up. He always give 100 percent. Fast hands, good boxer.”
SSC Napoli’s Italian Serie A title hopes suffered a late setback on Sunday when they were held to a 2-2 draw at home against Genoa, setting up a thrilling season finale with closest rivals Inter just one point behind. The hosts remain top with 78 points, holding a slim lead over Inter, who won 2-0 at Torino earlier on Sunday, with two rounds remaining. To make matters worse for Napoli, midfielder Stanislav Lobotka, struggling with an ankle injury, was forced off just minutes after the match began. Scott McTominay delivered a perfect pass into the box where Romelu Lukaku got
Harry Kane opened the scoring ahead of lifting his first career silverware as Bayern Munich beat Borussia Moenchengladbach 2-0, with veteran Thomas Mueller playing his last home game for the club. Bayern officially won the title on May 4 when defending champions Bayer Leverkusen were held to a 2-2 draw at Freiburg, but were presented with the Bundesliga shield in front of their home fans at full-time. Dripping wet after being showered with beer by teammates, Kane said the title win was “an incredible feeling,” and hoped it would be “the first of many.” “It’s been lot of hard work, a lot of
A stunning Lamine Yamal strike on Thursday helped crown Barcelona La Liga champions with a 2-0 win over local rivals RCD Espanyol, with victory ensuring Real Madrid cannot catch them at the top of the table. Yamal’s effort and Fermin Lopez’s goal took Hansi Flick’s side seven points clear of Los Blancos with two matches remaining, to clinch Barcelona’s 28th title and complete a superb domestic treble. Only the UEFA Champions League title escaped an exciting young Barca side this season, as they won the league for the second time in six years, at Espanyol’s ground again just as in 2022-2023. Jannik Sinner on Thursday marched into the semi-finals of the Italian Open after destroying Casper Ruud in straight sets 6-0, 6-1, while Coco Gauff won a marathon three-set battle with China’s Zheng Qinwen to advance to the women’s singles final. American Gauff is to face Italy’s Jasmine Paolini in today’s title match after pulling through 7-6 (7/3), 4-6, 7-6 (7/4) in a match that lasted over three-and-a-half hours. Ruud was supposed to be Sinner’s toughest test in Rome since he came back from his three-month doping ban, as the Norwegian came into the match in hot form on clay after winning in
