Wallabies coach Michael Cheika has omitted scrumhalf Nic White and seasoned No. 8 Wycliff Palu from a 31-man squad for Australia’s opening match of the southern hemisphere’s Rugby Championship against South Africa.
ACT Brumbies back Christian Lealiifano was a third high-profile omission after the initial squad was shaved down from 40 following a training camp on the Sunshine Coast this week.
The uncapped pair of ACT Brumbies lock Arnold and New South Wales winger Taqele Naiyaravoro were retained in the squad announced yesterday, as were France-based backs Matt Giteau and Drew Mitchell.
Lock Kane Douglas, who has requested a release from Irish side Leinster and is being hotly pursued by the Australian Rugby Union with the World Cup in mind, was omitted from the Stephen Moore-captained squad.
“There were obviously some really tough calls to make,” Cheika said in a statement.
“The players who have not been named in this 31-man squad will still remain part of the group and will continue to contribute. We have also taken the opportunity to rest players, as we know it is going to be a long international season,” he said.
“I have had a good chance to test some combinations and see some players in a high intensity environment,” he added. “It’s given me great confidence knowing we’re establishing some depth in key positions.”
With Brumbies halfback White out, Waratah Nic Phipps will vie with the Queensland Reds’ Will Genia for the No. 9 shirt for the match against the Springboks in Brisbane on Saturday next week.
Ben McCalman and Scott Higginbotham are likely to battle for the No. 8 position, though 54-cap Palu may be recalled later in the series.
The other players to miss out from the initial 40 were Dave Dennis, James Hanson, Tetera Faulkner, Samu Kerevi and Toby Smith.
The Springboks opener in the abridged Rugby Championship, which also includes Argentina and New Zealand, marks the start of Australia’s final match preparations for the World Cup in England.
MARRED FINAL: As most of Senegalese players walked off the pitch after a controversial decision, some supporters threw objects and attempted to get onto the pitch Senegal on Sunday won the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) as Pape Gueye’s extra-time winner sunk hosts Morocco 1-0 after a chaotic final that saw the eventual champions storm off the pitch late in the game. Brahim Diaz could have won the trophy for Morocco with a controversial spot-kick in the 24th minute of added time at the end of normal time as ugly scenes broke out in the stands. However, Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy easily saved the weak attempted “Panenka” chip by the Real Madrid winger, who was clearly distracted by the long delay that followed the penalty award.
James Harden on Friday scored 31 points and came up big in overtime to help the Los Angeles Clippers erase a double-digit deficit on the way to a 121-117 NBA victory over the Toronto Raptors. Harden scored 16 points in the fourth quarter and overtime as the Clippers pushed their wining steak to five games despite the absence of star Kawhi Leonard with a sprained right ankle. The Clippers trailed by 11 entering the fourth quarter, but Harden drilled a pair of free-throws with 1:24 left in regulation to tie it and after misses from both teams, they went to

Al-Attiyah, at the wheel of a Dacia, only had to avoid a final day slip-up to top the podium after bringing his career tally of stage wins to 50 on Friday. The win sees Detroit extend their lead at the top of the Eastern Conference to 31-10, 5.5 games ahead of second-placed Boston, who fell to 26-16 with the defeat.
