Clint Dempsey scored twice as the US men’s national team began their CONCACAF Gold Cup title defense on Tuesday by holding on to beat Honduras 2-1 at Toyota Stadium.
Dempsey scored on either side of halftime for the favored US, who came into the tournament riding a four-match friendly win streak and now move to the top of the Group A standings with three points.
“It wasn’t our best game, but we are happy to get three points from our first game,” Dempsey said.

The US have reached the final of the past five Gold Cups, winning three.
The US and Honduras are joined in Group A by Haiti and Panama, who played out a 1-1 draw in the first game of the 12-team, 19-day tournament’s opening day double-header.
The US, who have 16 players on the Gold Cup squad who played in last year’s World Cup, opened the scoring on Tuesday off a scramble in front of the goal.
Dempsey was in the right place at the right time when Honduras goalkeeper Donis Escober kicked a Jozy Altidore rebound right to him in the center of the box and he made no mistake, nodding it home in front of the crowd of 22,300. Dempsey made it 2-0 on another header, but this time off a free-kick. His leap from in front was not perfect, but it was high enough to get his head on a piece of the ball and deflect it past a flatfooted Escober in the 63rd minute.
Substitute Carlos Discua cut the US lead to one goal just five minutes later with a clever move to split the US defense and hammer a shot over the left shoulder of goalkeeper Brad Guzan. The US nearly had a third goal in the 78th minute as Escober made a difficult save off a Micheal Bradley free-kick.
Honduras controlled the play for much of the rest of the match, but they could not capitalize on their chances. They failed to score on Bryan Acosta’s corner in the 89th minute. DeAndre Yedlin elbowed a Honduras attacker in the back resulting in a free-kick in stoppage-time, but they squandered that opportunity as well.
“We took advantage of the opportunities that we got,” Dempsey said. “Once we scored the goal, they couldn’t press like they wanted to because they couldn’t afford to give up another. We weren’t at our best towards the end of the first half. Then we got the second goal. We should have saw the game out, but we made it difficult on ourselves.”
US goalkeeper Guzan was tested early by Honduras. He made a close-range save on Anthony Lozano’s attempt in the third minute and put a long shot from Acosta over the crossbar a few minutes later.
Juergen Klinsmann’s US side next face Haiti in group play tomorrow in Boston.
In the first game of the doubleheader, Alberto Quintero began the scoring in the 55th minute for Panama, who were the surprise team of the last Gold Cup in 2013, when they finished runners-up to the US.
Duckens Nazon got the equalizer in the 85th minute for Haiti, who are making their sixth appearance in the regional tournament.
Yesterday, Costa Rica were to play Jamaica and El Salvador were to face Canada at the StubHub Center Stadium in south-central Los Angeles. Mexico begin play today in Chicago against Cuba, while Trinidad and Tobago take on Guatemala, also in Chicago.
At stake in the tournament is a spot in the 2017 Confederations Cup in Russia.
Robinson Cano spent 17 seasons playing in the MLB in front of all kinds of baseball fans, but he said there is something special about his stint with the Mexican Baseball League’s Diablos Rojos. He is not alone. Arne Slot has denied that Darwin Nunez was dropped from Liverpool’s win against West Ham because of a training-ground row with a member of his coaching staff. The Liverpool head coach on Sunday last week said that Nunez was absent from the 2-1 victory at Anfield, having felt unwell during training the day before, although the striker sat behind the substitutes throughout the game. Speculation has been rife that the Uruguay international, whom Slot criticized for his work rate against Wolves and Aston Villa in February, was left out for disciplinary reasons. Asked on Friday to clarify the situation, Slot said: “He
CUNNINGHAM CONNECTS: In the Eastern Conference, the Pistons snapped their record 15-game playoff losing streak by beating the Knicks to level their series at 1-1 Kawhi Leonard on Monday scored 39 points on 15-of-19 shooting as the Los Angeles Clippers evened their first-round NBA Playoffs series against the Nuggets with a 105-102 win in Denver. “It feels like he didn’t miss a shot,” James Harden said. “His shot-making ability is elite.” Good thing, too, because his teammates were a combined 26 of 66 for a 39 percent clip. “I made shots tonight,” Leonard said. “I just keep playing, try to stay in the zone no matter if I’m making or missing shots.” The fifth-seeded Clippers needed every bit of his brilliance to snatch the homecourt advantage in the series
