Mauricio Pochettino said that he is running out of words to describe Harry Kane after the forward boosted Tottenham Hotspur’s hopes of claiming a place in next season’s Champions League.
Kane scored twice as Spurs beat relegation-threatened Queens Park Rangers 2-1 to take his season tally to 26 goals in all competitions and move his side to within three points of Manchester United, who lie fourth.
The forward had failed to score in his previous three games, but he took both his goals well to cap a fine display in front of England manager Roy Hodgson.

Not for the first time this season, Pochettino was able to reflect on a match-winning contribution from the 21-year-old, although the Spurs manager refused to be drawn on whether his player should receive a first England call-up.
He said: “It’s difficult to say anything else about Harry, his performance today shows his strength to keep working. It’s Roy Hodgson’s decision if he plays for England or not, but all of us here in the Tottenham family are happy with him.”
Kane himself is taking nothing for granted ahead of England’s Euro 2016 qualifier against Lithuania at the end of this month.
The striker said: “I just need to keep doing what I’m doing. There are still a few more games until the international break, so I just need to do the best I can for Spurs.”
“I’m loving my football, being out there with my team-mates and my mates,” he said. “I feel good and confident, it’s important for a striker to have that. The second goal was a nice composed finish.”
Midfielder Ryan Mason will also have caught Hodgson’s eye in a hard-fought victory that ended frantically after Sandra had pulled one back for the home side in the 75th minute.
“You can see the performance from the English players was fantastic,” Pochettino said. “Ryan played well, but so did the team; they all showed a big character. This type of game is when you can see that the team improve and show the character I think is so important for us to get the three points.”
Spurs’ season had been in danger of unraveling after they exited the Europa League at the hands of ACF Fiorentina and then lost the League Cup final against Chelsea within the space of three days last week.
That leaves the top four as their sole objective and they have now recorded back-to-back wins after the setbacks.
“The reaction after going out of Europe has been fantastic,” Pochettino said. “It was difficult after the defeat against Fiorentina. I think the response has been fantastic from the squad in the big games that have followed. We have to go away and now train hard to focus on our next match against Manchester United.”
Defeat leaves QPR in the bottom three, three points adrift of safety. Manager Chris Ramsey was left frustrated his side were denied two strong penalty appeals, particularly when Spurs’ Nabil Bentaleb appeared to handle inside the box.
“There are sometimes decisions where there are fine lines, but when you are in our position, you have to grab whatever you can, so I am disappointed they didn’t go our way,” Ramsey said. “You can see the players applied themselves well today, but when you play the top teams, they have the quality to punish any mistake.”
Veteran QPR defender Rio Ferdinand, 36, came in for criticism, particularly for his role in Kane’s second goal.
However, Ramsey said: “I think Rio Ferdinand played well. When goals go in people look to blame someone, but ... Rio should be praised for the way he is applying himself in training and the way he is playing.”
The Philadelphia 76ers, fueled by 36 points from Tyrese Maxey and a triple-double from Joel Embiid, on Thursday beat the Houston Rockets 128-122 in an NBA overtime thriller. Cameroonian big man Embiid scored 32 points, grabbed 15 rebounds and handed out 10 assists, posting the ninth triple-double of his career to help the Sixers end the Rockets’ three-game winning streak. Rockets star Kevin Durant scored 36 points and Amen Thompson added 17, but Thompson was scoreless in the fourth quarter. Even so, the Rockets led by nine midway through the final frame, Maxey tying it at 115-115 with 40.1 seconds left. Durant missed a
MARRED FINAL: As most of Senegalese players walked off the pitch after a controversial decision, some supporters threw objects and attempted to get onto the pitch Senegal on Sunday won the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) as Pape Gueye’s extra-time winner sunk hosts Morocco 1-0 after a chaotic final that saw the eventual champions storm off the pitch late in the game. Brahim Diaz could have won the trophy for Morocco with a controversial spot-kick in the 24th minute of added time at the end of normal time as ugly scenes broke out in the stands. However, Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy easily saved the weak attempted “Panenka” chip by the Real Madrid winger, who was clearly distracted by the long delay that followed the penalty award.
Qatar’s Nasser al-Attiyah on Saturday secured his sixth Dakar Rally car title in Saudi Arabia with Luciano Benavides scraping home by two seconds to claim the motorbike title. “We’ve worked very hard since last year. I might not be showing much emotion yet, but it’s there, deep down. We are so happy to win,” al-Attiyah said at the finish. Al-Attiyah, at the wheel of a Dacia, only had to avoid a final day slip-up to top the podium after bringing his career tally of stage wins to 50 on Friday. The 55-year-old, who took clay pigeon shooting bronze at the
Tobias Harris on Monday scored 25 points as the Detroit Pistons held off the Boston Celtics to score a 104-103 victory in their top-of-the-table Eastern Conference showdown. The win sees Detroit extend their lead at the top of the Eastern Conference to 31-10, 5.5 games ahead of second-placed Boston, who fell to 26-16 with the defeat.
