New India skipper Virat Kohli said he would encourage his team to play positively and not back down against Australia in the final Test in Sydney, which begins today.
Kohli has been thrust into the captaincy following the shock Test retirement of Mahendra Singh Dhoni following last week’s drawn third Test in Melbourne.
India’s premier batsman said his side would stand up to the Australian team, who have already reclaimed the Border-Gavaskar Trophy with an unassailable 2-0 lead in the four-match series.
“It’s important for the players to know that we need to be in a positive frame of mind. A line does not need to be crossed, but we are not here to back down from any sort of confrontation or any sort of battle. You will still see positive cricket and the same aggressive intent,” Kohli told reporters yesterday.
Kohli, who led India in the first Test in Adelaide, Australia, while Dhoni was recovering from a fractured thumb, has been his side’s leading batsman in the series, averaging 83.16 with three centuries and a fifty.
Kohli has been at the forefront of on-field confrontations with Australia players — notably Mitchell Johnson, Brad Haddin and David Warner — and his style of leadership is likely to be under scrutiny in the wake of Dhoni’s sudden exit.
“We were all taken aback by his decision because it was so sudden,” Kohli said of Dhoni. “We had no clue. We never saw it coming, so it was pretty shocking. There’s so much to learn from him, especially in tough situations: his composure, his decisionmaking at important times. These are the things which are priceless. Any captain would love to have them. I hope I can be as calm as him, but everyone has different styles.”
Kohli said that since the Melbourne Test he has been thinking about areas to improve the India squad, who have won only one of their past 22 Tests overseas and only one of 10 Tests at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
“There were quite a few things that I sat down and analyzed in Adelaide that can be improved on and I’ve thought about them in the past few days,” Kohli said. “What are the things that I can correct from Adelaide, the mistakes I made in that game?”
“Hopefully, I’ll get those right and try to make the right decisions in every situation out there in the middle,” he added.

For the second year running, the Real Madrid forward had a night to forget at Merseyside as Liverpool won 1-0. Mbappe looked a shadow of the player who has been tearing defenses apart all season. “We were lacking that threat in the final third,” said Madrid coach Xabi Alonso, without naming Mbappe individually. The FIFA World Cup winner for France rarely looked capable of finding a breakthrough against a Liverpool team who have been so defensively fragile for much of the

Erling Haaland on Sunday scored twice to propel Manchester City up to second in the English Premier League with a 3-1 win over AFC Bournemouth. The Cherries started the day in second thanks to the longest unbeaten run in the English top flight, but Andoni Iraola’s side were undone by the scintillating form of the Norwegian striker, who took his tally to 13 Premier League goals in 10 games. Haaland’s relentless streak is maintaining City’s title challenge as they reduced the gap to leaders Arsenal back to six points and edged one point ahead of Liverpool, who they face at the weekend. “Important
For almost 30 minutes, Vitomir Maricic did not take a breath. Face down in a pool, surrounded by anxious onlookers, the Croatian freediver fought spasming pain to redefine what doctors thought was possible. When he finally surfaced, he had smashed the previous Guinness World Record for the longest breath-hold underwater by nearly five minutes. However, even with the help of pure oxygen before the attempt, it had pushed him to the limit. “Everything was difficult, just overwhelming,” Maricic, 40, told reporters, reflecting on the record-breaking day on June 14. “When I dive, I completely disconnect from everything, as if I’m not even there.
