The chill winds of relegation anxiety have been blowing across the Premier League ahead of today’s New Year’s Day program, with a burst of managerial comings and goings ushering in the year.
A week ago, all 20 managers who had started the season were still in place, but two clubs approach the New Year without a manager, while Newcastle United are poised to lose Alan Pardew.
Crystal Palace were the first club to press the panic button, firing Neil Warnock the day after a Boxing Day defeat at home to Southampton that saw the south London club slip into the relegation zone.
Pardew is in line to return to Palace, where he spent four years as a player, after being given permission to speak to his former club by Newcastle.
Palace face Aston Villa today and Keith Millen, who has been placed in charge temporarily, has called on the club to appoint a successor to Warnock swiftly.
“You’d think that it would cause a lot of unrest among the players, but they have coped unbelievably well, but you wouldn’t want it to continue for weeks on end, because that’s when I think the lads want some guidance on where the club’s going,” Millen said. “So hopefully this can get solved pretty quickly.”
Two days after Warnock’s sacking, West Bromwich Albion announced the dismissal of Alan Irvine following a return of one win from nine games that has left the Midlands club just a point above the bottom three.
West Brom, who have reportedly opened talks with Tony Pulis and Tim Sherwood, face West Ham United.
While Palace and West Brom are desperate for points, Newcastle are in a position of relative prosperity, having climbed to 10th place in the table after Sunday’s 3-2 win over Everton.
However, although many Newcastle fans will not mourn Pardew’s exit, they will be wary of a downturn in fortunes ahead of a home game against Burnley, who fought back to draw 2-2 against champions Manchester City last weekend.
With Pardew apparently heading for the exit, assistant coaches John Carver and Steve Stone are set to take charge for the match against Burnley.
Bottom club Leicester City began their fight to beat the drop by winning 1-0 against Hull City on Sunday, which left them three points from safety.
Leicester are to visit improving Liverpool, while Hull, who are above third-bottom Palace on goal-difference alone, host Everton.
Manchester’s slipup against Burnley meant that Chelsea preserved their three-point lead at the summit, despite being held to a 1-1 draw against Southampton on Sunday.
Jose Mourinho’s side face a taxing trip to Tottenham Hotspur, who have moved to within two points of the Champions League places after a five-game unbeaten run.
“I think it’s going to be tough. We knew it was not over,” Chelsea striker Didier Drogba said of the title race. “A few years ago, I think we were 11 or 12 points in front of Man United and then they won the league. So eight points or nine points — I don’t know how many points we had on top of Man City — I think it is not enough.”
“At that time of the season, it was too early, but I think now we start again a new championship. I think the game is on,” he said.
City will also be seeking to return to winning ways when they host Sunderland, while third-placed Manchester United, who drew 0-0 against Spurs on Sunday, are to raise the curtain on the year with a match against Stoke City.
Perhaps the most intriguing contest of the weekend takes place at St Mary’s, where fourth-placed Southampton host fifth-placed Arsenal with a berth in the top four at stake.
Arsenal gained ground on the teams above them with a 2-1 win against West Ham on the weekend, but Southampton, who they trail on goal-difference, have now gone three games unbeaten following a run of poor results.
“You give your best and if there is a weakness in front of you, you want to take advantage of it,” Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger said.
Ademola Lookman on Thursday scored on his Atletico Madrid debut in a 5-0 rout of Real Betis Balompie that sent Diego Simeone’s team to the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey. David Hancko, Giuliano Simeone, Antoine Griezmann and Thiago Almada also scored for Atletico as they advanced to the last four for the third straight season. Atletico are trying to reach their first Copa final since winning the competition in 2012-2013. Hancko opened the scoring for the visitors in the 12th minute and Giuliano Simeone added to the lead in the 30th, before Lookman got his first goal for Atletico on a fast
GUNNING FOR A WIN: The victory sending Arsenal to the final for the first time in six years was cathartic for a team who had lost their previous four semi-finals Arsenal on Tuesday reached the League Cup final for the first time in eight years as Kai Havertz sealed a 1-0 win against Chelsea in the semi-final second leg. SUPERSTAR DELIVERS: Victor Wembanyama scored 29 points and pulled down 11 rebounds to propel the Spurs to a 135-123 victory over the Dallas Mavericks The Los Angeles Lakers on Thursday shook off the early exit of injured star Luka Doncic, rallying without him in the second half for a 119-115 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers. Austin Reaves, again coming off the bench in his second game back from a 19-game injury absence, scored 13 of his 35 points in the fourth quarter, drilling a pair of back-to-back three-pointers to give the Lakers their first lead of the game early in the final frame. “Losing Luka, you know nothing’s going to be easy after that because he does so much for us, but we bonded together,” said
France head coach Fabien Galthie on Thursday lauded his team’s attacking performance after their dazzling 36-14 victory over Ireland in their Six Nations opener. A brace of tries from Louis Bielley-Biarrey and one from mercurial flyhalf Matthieu Jalibert helped France storm into a 29-0 lead before taking their foot off the gas and allowing Ireland back into the match, before winger Theo Attissogbe put some gloss on the victory late on. “In an attacking sense, with the ball, the team played with great accuracy,” Galthie said. “It was one of the most accurate attacking performances in a long time, despite the weather
