For all the NFL’s much-vaunted unpredictability, last year’s regular season ended with largely expected results meaning a powerful playoff field headed by teams with recent Super Bowl experience.
Defending Super Bowl champions the Seattle Seahawks finished as top seed in the National Football Conference ahead of 2010 winners the Green Bay Packers.
In the American Football Conference, the New England Patriots are looking for a sixth Super Bowl appearance since 2001 after taking top seed ahead of last season’s runners-up the Denver Broncos.

All four quarterbacks from the top four seeded teams — the Broncos’ Peyton Manning, Seahawks’ Russell Wilson, New England’s Tom Brady and the Packers’ Aaron Rodgers — have already won a Super Bowl.
There is winning experience on the sidelines, too, where Denver’s John Fox is the only head coach from that quartet who has not landed a Lombardi Trophy.
The Seahawks made a shaky 3-3 start to the season, but ominously for their rivals ended their campaign with six straight wins and the fewest points allowed in the league for the third year in a row.

Head coach Pete Carroll said his team had answered the doubters in the media.
“You guys kept talking about how you can’t do this, can’t get to this point again ... and we just did it,” he said.
“We will see how we do in the playoffs. We got back to division champs and that is pretty rare. I’m really proud of that,” he added.

Equally predictable as the top seeds were most of the flops of the season. The bottom three in the AFC — the Jacksonville Jaguars, Oakland Raiders and Tennessee Titans — have not posted a winning record between them in the past six seasons.
However, the NFC had a few surprisingly bad failures with the Washington Redskins (4-12) and the Chicago Bears (5-11) not expected to be so poor. The decline of the San Francisco 49ers (8-8) and New Orleans Saints (7-9) also caught plenty of punters by surprise.
The main positive surprise of the season was the strong showing of the Dallas Cowboys, who took the No. 3 seed in the NFC with a 12-4 record as quarterback Tony Romo answered questions about his ability to lead the offense.

The Cowboys have not been to the Super Bowl since 1995 and have not reached the playoffs since 2009, but their form in the regular season, which included an impressive victory over the Seahawks, suggests they are capable of providing a challenge.
However, their success is about far more than Romo’s accomplished displays. DeMarco Murray set a new Cowboys single-season record for rushing yards, his 1,845 yards surpassing Emmitt Smith’s previous benchmark, and receiver Dez Bryant’s 16 touchdown catches was another franchise record.
While Dallas might be reaping the rewards for owner Jerry Jones’ faith in both Romo and coach Jason Garrett, patience ran out in New York where the Jets (4-12) fired Rex Ryan after another disappointing campaign.
A rebuilding operation is expected for the Jets after they also fired general manager John Idzik.
The Bears and Atlanta Falcons are also looking for new head coaches, as are the 49ers following Jim Harbaugh’s decision to move back to college football.
Other owners thinking of making changes might want to note the presence of the Pittsburgh Steelers in the wild-card round.
After losing the 2010 Super Bowl to the Packers and then suffering a defeat in the wild-card round the following year, the Steelers had two disappointing 8-8 seasons, leading some to question the future of coach Mike Tomlin.
With Tomlin still in charge, the Steelers (11-5) are now back in the post-season mix.
ADVANTAGE ATLETICO: Well off the pace in La Liga, the Copa del Rey represents Atletico Madrid’s best chance of silverware this season Atletico Madrid on Thursday hammered Copa del Rey holders Barcelona 4-0 in the first leg of their semi-final. After an Eric Garcia own-goal sent Diego Simeone’s side ahead early on, Antoine Griezmann, Ademola Lookman and Julian Alvarez struck to give Atletico a landslide lead by halftime. Barca defender Garcia was sent off in the final stages, with Atletico maintaining their significant advantage on the record 32-time winners, which they take into the second leg at the Camp Nou on March 3. Both sides missed good chances in the second half, with Barca’s Pau Cubarsi having a goal disallowed before Garcia was sent off
Stade Rennais, four days after firing coach Habib Beye, stunned Paris Saint-Germain 3-1 on Friday, snapping the defending champions’ seven-match winning run in French Ligue 1. Second-placed RC Lens could leapfrog the champions and retake top spot last night after press time if they beat Paris FC in the capital. PSG started brightly, with Ousmane Dembele and Desire Doue carving openings to no avail. Rennes fired Beye on Monday and promoted his assistant Sebastien Tambouret, and the same players who had lost four games on the bounce seemed transformed. Jordanian forward Mousa al-Tamari bagged the opener, unleashing a fierce strike
Dasun Shanaka hammered the fastest half-century by a Sri Lankan in T20Is as the cohosts thrashed Oman by 105 runs at the World Cup yesterday in Pallekele, Sri Lanka, for their second win in Group B. The 2014 champions piled up 225-5, the highest total of the tournament, before restricting an outclassed Oman to 120-9. The 43-year-old Mohammad Nadeem waged a lone battle for Oman, compiling an unbeaten 53 to become the oldest player to score a 50 in T20 World Cups. Having promoted himself up the order and under pressure to deliver, Sri Lanka skipper Shanaka smashed a 19-ball half-century. It has been
Manchester City FC halved Arsenal FC’s lead at the top of the Premier League with a 3-0 home defeat of Fulham FC, and Aston Villa FC stayed in the frame with a late 1-0 victory at home to Brighton and Hove Albion FC on Wednesday. Nottingham Forest FC squandered a chance to put some distance between themselves and the bottom three as they drew 0-0 at home to bottom club Wolverhampton Wanderers FC. Second-from-bottom Burnley FC pulled off a remarkable 3-2 comeback win over Crystal Palace FC to boost their slender survival hopes. City have little margin for error in their pursuit
