James Tyler’s buzzer-beating tip-in off a desperation miss by Chen Hsuan-hsiang rallied Bank of Taiwan from as much as 13 down in the second half to top the Yulon Luxgens in a 75-74 thriller at the Hsinchu Municipal Gymnasium yesterday afternoon.
“I’m really happy that we won the game, we just kept on working hard,” the US big man said after a game that many had thought was surely the Luxgens’ to win, as they led by two with possession of the ball and less than 40 seconds to play.
However, Lu Cheng-rue, the Luxgens’ best free throw shooter, would miss both of his attempts from the charity stripe with 9.3 seconds remaining in the game to set up Tyler’s game-stealing tip-in that gave the Bankers their fourth win of the season while dealing the Luxgens their fifth straight defeat.
What should have been a relatively easy win for the Auto-makers against the Bankers looked promising through three quarters of play as they Luxgens consistently outscored the Bankers in each and every quarter prior to the fourth to build a double-digit advantage.
That did not matter for Tyler and the Financial Wizards as they steadily chipped away at the deficit to tie the game and actually led it by as much as three midway through the fourth before getting into a seesaw battle with the Luxgens and prevailing in the end.
Tyler led all scorers with 24 and 19 rebounds, one rebound shy of a second straight double-20 effort after netting 26 and grabbing 21 boards in the Bankers’ one-point loss to Kinmen Kaoliang on Sunday last week.
TAIWAN BEER 79, TIGERS 67
Taiwan Beer followed its big win over Kinmen Kaoliang on Friday evening with a 79-67 trouncing of the Dacin Tigers in Hsinchu last night to improve to a 7-3 record, good enough to tie the Fubon Braves and Pure Youth Construction for the lead in the standings.
The Brew Crew doubled up on the Cats early with a 24-11 lead after one quarter of play, thanks to 14 combined points by Tso Tsung-kai and Liu Chan.
Even though Dacin would regain their composure to play Taiwan Beer evenly in the second quarter to keep the deficit to a manageable one, it was only a matter of time before Taiwan Beer picked apart the Dacin defense by hitting 11 of 17 (64.7 percent) from the field to clinch the victory long before the final buzzer sounded.
PURE YOUTH 82, KINMEN KAOLIANG 66
Pure Youth Construction bounced back from back-to-back losses for the first time in nearly three years by topping Kinmen Kaoliang 82-66 in the third match in Hsinchu last night.
Quincy Davis dominated the glass with a season-high 23 rebounds on a 19-point night to outshine the Distillers’ Bryan Davis, who racked up 22 points and 18 rebounds in a losing cause.
Major League Baseball (MLB) star Shohei Ohtani wants his former interpreter to hand over hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of baseball cards he says were fraudulently bought using his money. The legal filing alleges Mizuhara accessed Ohtani’s bank account beginning in about November 2021, changing his security protocols so that he
US skier Mikaela Shiffrin said she sustained an abrasion on her left hip and that something “stabbed” her when she crashed during her second run of an Audi FIS Ski World Cup giant slalom race on Saturday, doing a flip and sliding into the protective fencing. Shiffrin stayed down on the edge of the course for quite some time as the ski patrol attended to her. She was taken off the hill on a sled and waved to the cheering crowd before going to a clinic for evaluation. “Not really too much cause for concern at this point, I just
CLASH OF MANAGERS: Brighton’s Fabian Hurzeler and Russell Martin of Southampton accused each other of disrespect, while both were booked Southampton on Friday were denied a priceless victory by a controversial decision as they drew with hosts Brighton & Hove Albion 1-1 in the Premier League. A video assistant referee check of more than four minutes eventually decided that Archer was onside, but then penalized Adam Armstrong, who was offside, but did not touch the ball, for interfering with goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen. “I find it hard to accept,” Southampton manager Russell Martin
