AC Milan lost 2-0 at home to US Citta di Palermo and failed to move back level with third-place UC Sampdoria, who beat ACF Fiorentina 3-1 earlier on Sunday in Serie A.
Cristian Zapata scored an own-goal and was at fault for Paulo Dybala’s second as two goals in as many minutes consigned Milan to their second loss of the season.
Milan goalkeeper Diego Lopez also had to pull off a string of fine saves in his first appearance since mid-September.

“This is football,” Milan coach Filippo Inzaghi said. “You grow also through games like this. The team gave everything it had... We started really well, but everything will help us grow.”
Sampdoria goalkeeper Sergio Romero saved a penalty to help his side move three points ahead of Milan and Udinese, who lost 4-2 to Genoa.
US Sassuolo were held to a scoreless draw at bottom club AC Chievo Verona, while Atalanta BC also drew 0-0 at Torino.
Diego Lopez returned from a hamstring injury and was called into action right from the start at the San Siro, making a tough one-handed save to deny Franco Vazquez.
Milan also welcomed back young midfielder Riccardo Saponara, but Alex was injured in the third minute and had to be replaced by Zapata, who headed a corner into his own net in the 24th minute.
The Sicilian side almost doubled their lead immediately afterwards, but Diego Lopez pulled off a fantastic stop to deny Dybala from point-blank range.
However, Palermo and Dybala did have their goal moments later when the Argentine striker shook off Zapata and fired across Lopez and into the far side of the net.
“Paulo is a player who trains with humility and plays with great character,” Palermo Coach Giuseppe Iachini said. “He has all the credentials to aim for a future in a top club.”
Sampdoria were keen to get back on track after a dip in form had seen them fail to win any of their past three matches.
They took the lead in the 27th minute when Angelo Palombo drove in a penalty after Alberto Aquilani had clumsily pushed over Roberto Soriano.
Palombo gave away a penalty five minutes after converting one when he brought down Khouma Babacar, but Gonzalo Rodriguez’s spot-kick was weak and Romero managed to smother it.
Luca Rizzo doubled Sampdoria’s lead two minutes from the break, dribbling past two defenders at the byline, before sending in a low drive to set club president Massimo Ferrero dancing in the stands.
There was still time before the break for Stefan Savic to get Fiorentina back in the match with a towering header from a corner.
ACF Fiorentina were further boosted when Mario Gomez made his comeback from injury, coming on in the 69th minute for his first appearance since September, but Eder made sure of the points 12 minutes from time with a stunning solo effort, starting his run in his own half and beating three Fiorentina players.
Sampdoria moved a point above SSC Napoli and three behind second-placed AS Roma.
Genoa were also a point behind Sampdoria and leapfrogged Udinese in the table.
They went into the match full of confidence after inflicting a first defeat of the season on Serie A leaders Juventus last week, but found themselves behind after 23 seconds when Antonio di Natale beat the offside trap to latch onto Panagiotis Kone’s assist and record his 199th Serie A goal.
However, two goals in as many minutes saw Genoa on top.
The visitors leveled with a spectacular volley from Giovanni Marchese into the top-right corner from outside the opposite side of the penalty area, before howlers from Allan and Bruno Fernandes allowed Iago Falque to pounce from close range for his first Serie A goal.
Di Natale set up Silvan Widmer for the equalizer four minutes from the break, but Genoa restored their advantage nine minutes after the interval when Alessandro Matri fired in off the right upright.
Substitute Juraj Kucka sealed the victory two minutes from time with a chip into the top corner, off the underside of the crossbar.
SSC Napoli will have to wait one more week to seal the Serie A title after on Sunday being held to a goalless draw at Parma, while closest rivals Inter drew 2-2 in a dramatic game with SS Lazio. Antonio Conte’s team stayed one point ahead of Inter and were unfortunate not to win after twice striking the woodwork through Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa and Matteo Politano, while Scott McTominay also had a free-kick tipped onto the crossbar. The away side thought they would be handed a chance to take the points from the penalty spot in the 96th minute when David Neres
Omar Marmoush’s stunning long-range strike on Tuesday upstaged Kevin de Bruyne on the Manchester City great’s Etihad farewell. Marmoush let fly from about 30m to put City ahead in their 3-1 win against AFC Bournemouth in the Premier League. The victory moved Pep Guardiola’s team up to third in the standings and left qualification for the UEFA Champions League in their own hands heading into the last round of the season. “It’s really important. To be in the Champions League after what happened [this season] will be really nice,” the City manager said. De Bruyne was making his final home appearance for City before
Brighton & Hove Albion’s Jack Hinshelwood on Monday sealed a dramatic 3-2 victory against Liverpool to leave the English Premier League champions without a win since clinching the title. Arne Slot’s side took the lead through Harvey Elliott’s early opener before Yasin Ayari equalized at the American Express Stadium. Dominik Szoboszlai restored Liverpool’s advantage just before halftime, but Brighton staged a late fightback as Kaoru Mitoma leveled before Hinshelwood came off the bench to net with his first touch. Liverpool have taken just one point from their three matches following the title-clinching rout of Tottenham Hotspur on April 27. The Reds have lost at
Logan O’Hoppe, Taylor Ward and Matthew Lugo homered, and the Los Angeles Angels spoiled Clayton Kershaw’s season debut, beating the Los Angeles Dodgers 11-9 on Saturday night to take the first two games of the three-game series. Kershaw allowed three runs and threw 38 pitches in the first inning. The three-time National League Cy Young Award winner lasted four innings, giving up five runs on five hits with three walks and two strikeouts. Shoulder, toe and knee injuries limited Kershaw to seven games last season, and his 2025 debut was delayed as he recovered from multiple offseason surgeries. O’Hoppe had two hits with
