The San Jose Sharks saw their two-game shutout streak come to an end, but they rode an early three-goal lead to a wild 6-5 shootout win over Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals, extending their season-opening win streak to three games.
Joe Pavelski scored the only goal in the shootout as the Sharks improved to 3-0, while the Capitals fell to 1-0-2.
The Capitals battled back from deficits of 3-0, 4-1 and 5-3 to send the game into overtime, getting two goals from Ovechkin and one each from Marcus Johnasson, Mike Green and Troy Brouwer.
The Sharks received a pair of goals from defenseman Matt Irwin and one each from right wing John Scott, Pavelski and center Tommy Wingels.
ISLANDERS 6, RANGERS 3
Kyle Okposo, Brock Nelson and Mikhail Grabovski scored goals over the first 5 minutes, 20 seconds of the third period to propel the New York Islanders to a 6-3 victory against the New York Rangers.
The surge broke a 2-2 tie as the Islanders, who won four games in all of October last season, improved to 3-0-0.
John Tavares, Johnny Boychuk and Nick Leddy also scored for the Islanders.
DEVILS 2, LIGHTNING 1
New Jersey’s Mike Cammalleri scored a power-play goal at 11:19 of the third period to lead the Devils to a 2-1 victory at the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Goaltender Cory Schneider stopped 26 of 27 shots as the Devils stayed perfect on the road so far this season.
The Devils improved to 3-0 as the Lightning dropped to 2-1-1.
STARS 4, BLUE JACKETS 2
Dallas center Tyler Seguin had three goals and an assist, while Jamie Benn had a goal and three assists, leading the Stars to their first victory of the season, a 4-2 win at Columbus.
Both Benn and Seguin came into the game with zero points and minus-three ratings on the season.
Ryan Johansen scored both goals for the Blue Jackets.
DUCKS 4, FLYERS 3, SO
Rookie center William Karlsson scored in his first shootout attempt, lifting the Anaheim Ducks to a 4-3 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers.
Tim Jackman, Devante Smith-Pelly and Matt Beleskey scored goals in regulation for the Ducks (3-1-0).
Jakub Voracek, Wayne Simmonds and Mark Streit recorded regulation goals for the Flyers.
