World No. 1 Serena Williams withdrew from the Wuhan Open yesterday after falling ill midway through the first set of her second-round match against Frenchwoman Alize Cornet.
The American top seed was leading 6-5 after breaking Cornet’s serve with a smash, only for the doctor to come on court at the changeover and take the 32-year-old’s temperature.
Williams, who was playing in her first match since winning her 18th Grand Slam singles title at the US Open earlier this month, sat solemnly, head down with a towel around her neck and a thermometer in her mouth, before opting against continuing.

Williams had showed flashes of her usual brilliance, but she did not look at full fitness throughout her hour of activity on Center Court.
Her exit only added to the headache for organizers of the inaugural US$2.4 million WTA Tour hard-court event, where top names tumbled in early action after the city’s tennis trailblazer, Li Na, announced her retirement from the game last week.
Former world No. 1 and 10th seed Jelena Jankovic was also forced to quit her second-round match in the first set while trailing CoCo Vandeweghe of the US 4-1.
That followed the departure of Romanian world No. 2 Simona Halep, who was beaten by an aggressive display from Garbine Muguruza of Spain.
The Spanish 20-year-old smashed 34 winners as she knocked out the second seed 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 and set up a third-round meeting with Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina, who battled back from a 5-0 deficit in the first set to edge Germany’s Sabine Lisicki 7-6 (7/3), 6-3.
Italian 11th seed Sara Errani was ousted by Alison Riske of the US 6-4, 6-4, while Swiss qualifier Timea Bacsinszky defeated 13th seed and US Open semi-finalist Ekaterina Makarova of Russia 6-4, 6-1.
Danish eighth seed Caroline Wozniacki, who lost to Williams in the Flushing Meadows final in New York, narrowly avoided joining the exodus after battling back from a break down in the third set to edge Spain’s Carla Suarez Navarro 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (7/4).
In the late matches yesterday evening, sixth seed Eugenie Bouchard of Canada defeated Mona Barthel of Germany 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, seventh-seeded German Angelique Kerber defeated Zarina Diyas of Kazakhstan 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 and third seed Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic defeated Italian qualifier Karin Knapp 6-3, 6-0.
On Monday, fifth seed Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland, ninth seed Ana Ivanovic of Serbia, 12th seed Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia, 14th seed Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic and 15th seed Flavia Pennetta of Italy all made exits to leave the tournament wide open.
If the Wild finally break through and win their first playoff series in a decade, Minnesota’s top line likely will be the reason. They were all over the Golden Knights through the first two games of their NHL Western Conference quarter-finals series, which was 1-1 going back to Minnesota for Game 3 today. The Wild tied the series with a 5-2 win on Tuesday. Matt Boldy had three goals and an assist in the first two games, while Kirill Kaprizov produced two goals and three assists. Joel Eriksson Ek, who centers the line, has yet to get on the scoresheet. “I think the biggest
From a commemorative jersey to a stadium in his name, Argentine soccer organizers are planning a slew of tributes to their late “Captain” Pope Francis, eulogized as the ultimate team player. Tributes to the Argentine pontiff, a lifelong lover of the game, who died on Monday at the age of 88, have been peppered with soccer metaphors in his homeland. “Francisco. What a player,” the Argentine Football Federation (AFA) said, describing the first pope from Latin America and the southern hemisphere as a generational talent who “never hogged the ball” and who showed the world “the importance of having an Argentine captain,
Noelvi Marte on Sunday had seven RBIs and hit his first career grand slam with a drive off infielder Jorge Mateo, while Austin Wynn had a career-high six RBIs as the Cincinnati Reds scored their most runs in 26 years in a 24-2 rout of the Baltimore Orioles. Marte finished with five hits, including his eighth-inning homer off Mateo. Wynn hit a three-run homer in the ninth off catcher Gary Sanchez. Cincinnati scored its most runs since a 24-12 win against the Colorado Rockies on May 19, 1999, and finished with 25 hits. Baltimore allowed its most runs since a 30-3 loss to
Arne Slot has denied that Darwin Nunez was dropped from Liverpool’s win against West Ham because of a training-ground row with a member of his coaching staff. The Liverpool head coach on Sunday last week said that Nunez was absent from the 2-1 victory at Anfield, having felt unwell during training the day before, although the striker sat behind the substitutes throughout the game. Speculation has been rife that the Uruguay international, whom Slot criticized for his work rate against Wolves and Aston Villa in February, was left out for disciplinary reasons. Asked on Friday to clarify the situation, Slot said: “He
