Taiwan’s Hsieh Su-wei was knocked out of the quarter-finals of the Guangzhou International Women’s Open yesterday by second seed Alize Cornet.
The Taiwanese world No. 171 went toe-to-toe with the 22nd-ranked Frenchwoman in the first set — breaking twice to lead 6-5, only for Cornet to hit back and move ahead by coming from 5-4 down to win the tiebreak — but she then fell apart in the second to fall to a 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 defeat.
Cornet served four aces and six double faults as she saved nine of 12 break-point chances and converted six of nine to complete the victory in 1 hour, 52 minutes and set up a semi-final against Switzerland’s Timea Bacsinszky, who defeated Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor of Spain 6-2, 6-3 in 1 hour, 35 minutes.
In the other quarter-finals, Chinese wild-card Wang Yafan battled back from a set down to beat fellow countrywoman Zhang Kai-lin 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 and set up a semi-final against Monica Niculescu of Romania, who defeated Monica Puig of Puerto Rico 6-2, 6-2.
