Yordano Ventura and the Kansas City Royals turned Derek Jeter Day into another disappointing defeat for the New York Yankees’ captain in the dwindling days of his career.
Ventura allowed just three hits into the seventh inning as the American League Central leaders beat the Yankees 2-0 on Sunday with a pair of unearned runs for their second shutout in the three-game series.

Kansas City scored due to errors by pitcher Shane Greene (4-3) in the second inning and right fielder Carlos Beltran in the third. The Royals, who won 1-0 on Friday night on an unearned run following an error by third baseman Chase Headley, went 4-3 against the Yankees this year to take the season series for the first time since 1999.
Ventura (12-9) won his third straight start, leaving after a leadoff walk in the seventh.
Jeter, who is retiring at the end of the season, went 1 for 3 with a first-inning single and a third-inning walk. Before the game, he was honored during a 45-minute ceremony on the field that included NBA great Michael Jordan and baseball ironman Cal Ripken Jr.

Angels slugger Mike Trout hit his 32nd homer and C.J. Wilson recovered from a slow start as Los Angeles completed a season sweep of the Minnesota Twins 14-4.
Howie Kendrick, who had three hits and four RBIs, and C.J. Cron also homered for Los Angeles. The AL West leaders had a season-high 19 hits and completed their fifth four-game sweep this season, extending a franchise record. They finished 7-0 against the Twins.
In Detroit, rookie Kyle Lobstein earned his first major-league win, and Miguel Cabrera homered for the third time in two days as Detroit downed the San Francisco Giants 6-1.
The Tigers beat the Giants for just the second time in 10 games, including San Francisco’s sweep of Detroit in the 2012 World Series. Torii Hunter, getting a rare chance to face a starting pitcher older than he is, had three hits against Tim Hudson (9-10).
The Los Angeles Dodgers trounced the Arizona Diamondbacks 7-2 after Adrian Gonzalez hit a pair of three-run homers to reach 100 RBIs in a season for the seventh time.
Trevor Cahill held the Dodgers hitless for more than five innings until Dee Gordon ended the no-hit bid with a one-out double in the sixth.
Brad Hand pitched six sharp innings and Jarrod Saltalamacchia drove in two runs to lead the Miami Marlins over the Atlanta Braves 4-0, while Carlos Carrasco came within one out of his first complete game as the Cleveland Indians finished a three-game sweep of the Chicago White Sox 2-0.
In other games, the Texas Rangers ended an eight-game losing streak with a 1-0 win over the Seattle Mariners, the Colorado Rockies blanked the San Diego Padres 6-0, the Baltimore Orioles beat the Tampa Bay Rays 7-5 in overtime and the Pittsburgh Pirates downed the Chicago Cubs 10-4.
The St Louis Cardinals completed a 9-1 rout of the Milwaukee Brewers, the Washington Nationals edged the Philadelphia Phillies 3-2, the Houston Astros beat the Oakland Athletics 4-3, the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the Boston Red Sox 3-1 and the New York Mets were 4-3 winners over the Cincinnati Reds.
